~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California

Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego is a United States Marine Corps military installation in San Diego, California. It lies between San Diego Bay and Interstate 5, adjacent to Lindbergh Field and the former Naval Training Center San Diego.

MCRD San Diego's main mission is the initial training of enlisted male recruits living west of the Mississippi River. Over 21,000 recruits are trained each year. The Depot also is the home to the Marine Corps' Recruiter School and Western Recruiting Region's Drill Instructors School.

Recruit training for those enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, also referred to as boot camp, includes a thirteen week process during which the recruit becomes cut off from the civilian world and must adapt to a Marine Corps lifestyle.

During training, the drill instructors train recruits in a wide variety of subjects including weapons training, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, personal hygiene and cleanliness, close order drill, and Marine Corps history. The training emphasizes physical fitness and recruits must attain a minimum standard of fitness to graduate.

This standard includes a Physical Fitness Test. Recruits must also meet minimum combat-oriented swimming qualifications, qualify in rifle marksmanship with the M16A2 service rifle.

Unlike training at Parris Island, recruits must leave the depot to conduct field training. The second three-week phase is spent at Edson Range aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, where recruits fire on the rifle range. At the conclusion, recruits return to San Diego, but will return at the end of recruit training for the 56-hour "culminating" event called The Crucible.

Learn More About Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego HERE!!

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Command Museum boasts one of the most extensive and comprehensive displays of Marine Corps historical items in the Nation. The Museum has over 150,000 annual visitors and occupies 22,233 square feet of indoor space.

The Mission at the MCRD Command Museum is “To provide an educational setting that portrays the legacy of the Marine Corps for the training of recruits and the continuing education of Marines, that functions as a supporting arm to the recruiting effort, and that serves as a bridge to the civilian community.”

Hiya Kathy!

Still at sister's place, taking a train back home tomorrow and then will get my repaired truck back on Saturday, with a short journey back to Washington.

Been a bit of a hassle, but at least the end is in sight. My boss has been very understanding, teased me about just wanting a longer Thanksgiving break :-)

HEY, I'll show him my receipts :-)

Monday is going well, thank you. *hugs*

Weather is on the freezing side in the mornings but bearable during the day. Some rain might warm it up!

Those "things" are doing what they normally do but I'll survive! :)

Are you getting more sleep yet?

It was almost 40 years ago that I arrived at MCRD San Diego and began a career that would span across five different decades and ended with my retirement shortly after coming home from Afghanistan for the last time. Only the first six years of my military career were spent as a United States Marine, but those six years provided a solid foundation for the remainder of my military service. Semper Fidelis.

I did a little better last night. Hopefully tonight too.

I’m really beat and a hot shower should help.

Wishing you some rain.

Ahhhh....MCRD, Home Sweet Home! I spent 1 1/2 years sleeping in MCRDs huts and tents.

My fondest memories are of the base “Musics” marching to the Flagpole each morning playing “Waltzing Matilda” then playing the Star Spangled Banner while raising the National Colors, “COLORS!” and playing the Marine Corps Hymn while marching back to their baracks area.

Secondly is the look on the faces of Navy Recruits, who had vaulted the 3’ tall fence between the Naval Training Center and MCRD only to discover that in fleeing those mean ole Petty Officers, they had landed in the laps of the Drill Instructors of the Receiving Baracks of MCRD.

While they were reported as in “custody” to the Navy they were treated to a full 2 weeks as a raw recruit Marine before returning home to NTC........lolololol

Good evening, Pro...((HUGS))...glad to hear that repairs are getting underway and you will be back in business by the weekend. Was it the clutch?

Does the train get you near where you need to go? Will you take the train back up to Washington? Enjoy your trip on the train as best you can.

Receipts should do the trick. LOL!!
