Investor's Business Daily ^ | 11/26/2012 | IBD Staff

Budget Policy: Republicans are being hounded mercilessly to abandon their no-tax pledge to get a deal on the fiscal cliff. So why aren't Democrats facing any pressure to compromise on entitlement spending? Every Republican who happens to bump into a reporter these days is sure to be grilled on tax hikes. [snip] But while GOP leaders have been signaling a willingness to cut a deal — even if it means agreeing to some form of tax hike — Democrats are digging in against any meaningful changes to out-of-control entitlement programs.

When a republican is in office and congress is republican, we’ll see that pressure.

No party is going to lobby for their own spending cuts, which they could pass easily, but they will always lobby for the other party’s spending cuts...it’s the way it is and that’s why we never really get significant spending cuts.

What party would let their candidate run on a platform of spending cuts in their own party?

Why not let us alone for a change and go after Harry Reid and all the pork barrel money that’s wasted

Any R on radio or TV or print should be hounding this message and nothing else — Dems refuse to talk spending cuts. Our problem is too much spending, not insufficient taxing. Without spending cuts from the Dems, we go nowhere - print that, or broadcast that 20 times a day if necessary. We can change the storyline.

Sigh...there ain't no pressure to cut spending....

....the 47+% are sitting out here like a big steaming pile of dog poop, growing, not EVER voting for anyone with a R beside their name....

...so...NO Republican who is desiring to be re-elected is going to agitate for any kind of tax cuts OR spending cuts lest the 47+% send them packing.

...."we" are so screwed....

You post that as if the GOP or any (R) had a message to give that was different from the (D)....let along articulate and easily digested by the mass of stupid voters.

How’s this one (for FREE): “How much of your life are you willing to let the gov’t OWN you?”

Then break it down per Citizen.

I’d LOVE to see all spending bills having to be divvied up per State for payment. Having the States collect for the gov’t might finally show everyone where/what they are getting for the $$

Which means it isn’t the Republicans’ tax pledge that should be the subject of public outrage; it’s the Democrats’ refusal to abandon their big-spending ways.

OUTSTANDING editorial, IBD editorial writer! Exposing propagandists at work and presenting another point of view. Although...no name, no moving pictures, no smiling faces, no slick advertisements, no compassionate inflections, no compatriot amplification of message, etc., etc...you might as well be writing with invisible ink.

Thanks for being here.

Actually, the Current Occupant of the White Hut and the Democrat majority in the Senate ARE feeling the pressure, only in a different and much less publicized way.

In 2011, as part of the compromise to raise the debt ceiling limit, the Senate voted for, and the Current Occupant signed into law, the Budget Control Act, which reverts the tax rates to the level they were before the “Bush tax cuts” were pushed through, and takes an ax to the Federal spending for government programs.

Well, they got their increase in the Federal debt limit. Now that it is all spent (or soon will be), time to take the consequences. And how are they to renege, if no alternative gets through the House of Representatives?

But I suppose we should not discount the very real probability the Republican leadership will cave. Truth is, we are quickly running out of road to kick the can down.

Cue in that majestic plunge in the last scene of “Thelma and Louise”. The 1966 Thunderbird is forever suspended, in our imaginations, over the Grand Canyon.

I used to think people would get wise and insist upon a return to Constitutionally based leadership after the wheels come off.

But after last Nov 6 I can't even await the fiscal end with grim satisfaction anymore - when it comes I'm now convinced people will demand an emperor with absolute power.

“So why aren’t Democrats facing any pressure to compromise on entitlement spending? “

Twofold: Beohner is a crying little wimp, as are 99% of the Republican representation. AND the ENEMIES in the press will conveniently ignore that spending is continuously increasing with nonstop in sight because they agree with it.

There's no pressure for spending cuts, or compromise when Chambliss, McLame and the other RINOs have already surrendered.

Media says that the Dems' government spending is stimulus and is good.
Heck, we need more!

Here's a picture of the economy before stimulus and after:

More stimulus please!

The Democrats are not stupid.

Spending got them elected.

No way in hell will they vote to cut their own throats.

Now we can argue all day about whether or not this election was bought, but the fact is that it was. Bought with the money from those of us who work and pay taxes. If they stop making the payments to those who suck off the government, the Democrats will have to run without having purchasd the vote in advance.

That isn’t about to happen.

So they will bankrupt us buying votes.

Haven’t you heard?
B0 has already made the tough decisions to slash spending by a trillion dollars over the next hundred years.

One idea that the Liberal Agenda Media Elite, or LAME, will never mention is the fundamental difference between government and Business.

In Business, the main concern is profitability, and the imposition of a rigorous profit and loss disciple on all aspects of that business.

In the Federal Government, profit and loss are rarely considered, and when considered, usually ignored.

In government, the Federal Politician’s main concerns center around using their definition of ‘Bipartisam Compromise’ to achieve their primary goal of being re-elected.

A “BiPartisan Compromise” to a Democrat means NEVER give up any move to the Left concession agreed to by the Right, and if possible do not do what the Democrats promised to do in the Compromise.

For nearly 80 years now, the Democrats have demanded two steps to the Left, “Compromised” by agreeing to taking one step to the Right, which then gave them a net one step to the Left EVERY TIME that a ‘BiPartisan Compromise’ was made.

Thus, the US Federal Government has steadily moved always to the Left and with few exceptions almost always with a substantial financial loss.

The supporters of the RINOs have usually been very grateful to their Heros, the RINOs, for not allowing the Democrats to get all that they had at first demanded.

Thus, the RINOs get re-elected for doing a ‘good’ job, and the RINOs have job security for life.

Hence, we Conservatives must convince the RINO supporters to at least question their blind support of their Republicans In Name Only.

Filling in for Rush yesterday Mark Steyn nailed it.

Look into their eyes in Washington, and it is clear they have NO INTENTION of EVER cutting spending or paying down the debt.
