Fluke told some outrageous stories about five different women but specifically stated she was not going to talk about herself.
She never discussed her sex life, never mentioned her own use of contraceptives, and never mentioned her own cost of contraceptives.
Rush made all of that up - primarily because he began his rant based on a news article (CNS?) he was reading and not only Fluke's actual statement.
However, because Rush said it, people believe Fluke talked about her sex life and use of contraceptives.
Thanks to the 'slut' controversy, conservatives lost the ability to attack Fluke's statements based on their actual merit.
Case in point? One of the women Fluke talked about was raped but never went in for STD tests. Her insurance plan didn't cover contraception so she assumed nothing related to her lady parts was covered. That's just stupid - and all of the additional health insurance in the world isn't going to fix stupid.
Fluke used that as one of her examples on why contraception HAD to be covered by health insurance.
Conservatives would have had much more effective arguments against Fluke if we had been able to concentrate on what Fluke actually said rather than putting out the fire Limbaugh started.
Limbaugh did not base his comments on Fluke's statement. According to Rush, he was commenting on an article by Craig Bannister at Cybercast News Service.
