How well run are America’s 50 states? The answer depends a lot on where you live.

Every year, 24/7 Wall St. conducts an extensive survey of all fifty states in America. Based on a review of data on financial health, standard of living and government services by state we determine how well each state is managed. For the first time, North Dakota is the best run. California is the worst run for the second year in a row.

I am surprised that Arizona is number 47. The others appear to be fly-over country. Hahahaha.

IMO, Iowa is more purple than red. Your point is still valid, of course.

I would basically agree. Don’t how AZ wound up on the bad boy list. Thought Jan Brewer was doing a good job, especially on illegal immigration.

I always thought Texas should be up there: They have:
1) No state income tax.
2) Right to work
3) Tort reform
4) Drill baby drill
5) An enforced capital punishment.
6) Gun rights
7) A pro-business environment and state government.

Could you ask for more?

I would also add Wisconsin under Walker and Kasich under Ohio and Indiana under both Pence and his predecessor to the well-managed list.

I live in CA. I can attest: We are the worst of the worse, only our national government in DC is more poorly mismanaged.

The article discusses the methodology a bit. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be of the “raising taxes = fiscal responsibility” persuasion.

Forgot to mention, Texas also has a part time state legislature-—the state really does subscribe to the first rule of governance: Do no harm.

Indiana really made some great reforms and strides under Mitch Daniels. I suspect Mike Pence will add to that.

AZ has 19% below the poverty line.

Guess why.

AZ spends too way much trying to make liberals happy - which is impossible - but our government seems reasonably competent, otherwise. I wouldn’t say 47th - somewhere in the 20’s, maybe.

Or, more correctly:

  1. Dark red
  2. Dark red
  3. Dark red
  4. Dark red
  5. Light blue to purple

    50. Dark blue
    49. Dark blue
    48. Dark blue
    47. Light blue to purple
    46. Dark blue

And it isn't polite to say it, but #5 goes up a few notches because it is mostly white and #47 goes down a few notches because it has a large population of a certain minority which it isn't polite to point out.

Guess why? . . . because it has a large population of a certain minority which it isn't polite to point out.

And I'm not talking about Apache, Mormons or Navajo.

I’m sure if you moved there you would find one rather quickly.

I’d like to get the hell out of Dodge as well. Only family considerations keep me here, hence my screen name.

"IMO, Iowa is more purple than red. Your point is still valid, of course."

I had Iowa as Blue.

They voted for Ubama TWICE, and I sure as hell don't know why the Republicans insist on start their primary in a Blue State.

I say Iowa can join the other liberal hell holes in oblivion.

I agree Iowa is more purple. Even my left leaning students aren’t completely brainwashed. I have a number of students who grew up on farms (hard work) or go to church and aren’t afraid to admit it in public. They may have brought you Obama, but there are too many small towns here, too many places where people still know what it is to be American, for us to be completely blue.

Iowa is an anomoly. Yes on the presidential is quite blue, voting twice for the Marxist and usually in the Democrat column for president.

But statewide, it does have A GOP governor and state legislature. The people there may be dovish on foreign policy, but they are also frugal on spending. I would have to imagine Iowa is a basically well managed state that keeps it spending in line and manages its finances responsibily.
