McCain to pro-lifers: State your position, then ‘leave the issue alone’

Former presidential nominee John McCain is urging Republicans to confine their support for the unborn to rhetoric but abandon thoughts of enacting new legislation.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday over the weekend, the Arizona senator said the GOP needs “a bigger tent” to be successful in presidential elections, and part of that means dropping social issues important to conservatives.

Echoing the talking point that men should not weigh in on a female issue McCain said, “I don’t think anybody like me —” then pointed to himself before changing gears abruptly. “I can state my position on abortion, but other than that, leave the issue alone, when we are in the kind of economic situation and, frankly, national security situation we’re in.”

I can't reverse it. I'm not sure any human can.

Humans can effect change. That is why we are where we are.

Inability to do so would not ony be boring, but useless waste of potential. Potential to do good, to better one's self, and humanity.

I don't claim to know why the Good Lord put us here, but I am willing to bet my life that is isn't/wasn't to go with the flow, accepting status quo.

We just have many different ways to go for it.

You keep up your end Brother, and fight the good fight.

I will do same the best way I know how.

I'm not well known for accepting the status quo.

We all have our part to do.

In the end, though, it is in His Hands.

Prayers for you and yours, too.

Basically McCain is saying "Let's join the Democrat Party and we can just all Be One!"

Ol' "Reach Across the Aisle" has a chronic case of Stockholm Syndrome.

Sounds like how he treated MIA’s families. Scum of the earth and I don’t care how many years he was a POW.

McCain should shut up and sit down on every issue except Benghazi. Stick to that, John. Better yet, get someone else besides you or Lindsey to be the point man.

We women - who are not already doing so - need to step up and challenge other women when they babble about their “abortion rights”. I recently had That experience with a woman who claims to be a libertarian. She ranted at me that she - and single women in general - would not vote for the GOP because Republicans were against civil rights and abortion rights and wanted to overturn Roe. Overturning Roe is of course highly unlikely and would only return the issue to the states.

I told her that women such as herself had no credibility as advocates for “rights” when they would not extend them to the most vulnerable, the unborn. And would instead vote for someone who - in The Illinois legislature - advocated that babies born alive after abortion should be left to die. I said that abortion benefits men, and damages women physically and emotionally, and that women should acknowledge as much to each other. We have to say this to these pro-choice women. Many of them take these positions because they want to fit in with other women. Challenge and ridicule them as hypocrites and see how firm their convictions are.

I added that all these women ranting about rights actually wanted to give up their autonomy to the state - to pay for their abortions and birth control and everything else. To become “Julia.”. Which is the furthest thing from libertarian that you can get.

So-called libertarians need to consider that their social liberal views will always overwhelm their supposed fiscally conservative views. The two cannot co-exist. Social liberalism is all about big government.

I want to see just how many abortions have been prevented by stamping feet and otherwise swearing how this or that candidate is not worthy

Well said. There are a lot of Freepers with shoes worn down to paper thinness by foot-stamping.

McCain was asked last night would he still vote not to confirm Rice as Sec of State and he said right now he would have a hard time voting for her. He was then asked would he vote for John Kerry as Sec of Defense. He said he had no problem at all with Kerry as Sec of Defense. McCain is a weasel of the first degree. He damn well knows Kerry’s reputation with veterans and he knows that Kerry lied like hell when he said he has witnessed war crime in Vietnam. It makes no difference to the man nicknamed “Songbird” during his time as POW. He told his captors anything they wanted to hear for preferential treatment. There are pictures of McCain in a hospital bed after he was shot down, smoking a cigarette and grinning for the camera. He was not too well liked by many of his fellow POWs.

I can see right now where this is heading. The Republican party is rushing headlong to dump social issues altogether and become not the party of Democrats-lite, but Democrats, period.

If that’s what it takes to win elections from now on, they can damn well do it without my help. I caved and stood in line for an hour and a half to vote for Romney, in a last-ditch desperate attempt to dump the Destroyer-in-Chief. Let the Republican party go their leftward route if that’s what the fools want.......I won’t sell my soul to the devil

As for McCain and his belief that a man can’t speak up about women’s issues, is he that cowardly and stupid? It’s about ending a LIFE.

He might have had courage to spare during his imprisonment in Vietnam, but apparently he used it all up there.

“the Arizona senator said the GOP needs “a bigger tent” to be successful in presidential elections, and part of that means dropping social issues important to conservatives.”

Well, there will plenty of room in the tent, once you have pushed conservatives out into the cold.

You want us to vote for you, then you are going to have to listen to us, just like any other voters. Otherwise, we are not going to vote for you. We won’t be the house negroes on the Grand Old Plantation.

I think he’s saying; Be pro-life, vote pro-life, just don’t campaign on the issue and make yourself a target.

That’s probably not bad advice.

That's exactly what he said. Won't happen though. See, we make our candidates pledge compliance to various single-issue groups before we'll support their campaigns.

Liberals are smarter than we are. They know it's better to keep their mouths shut on socially divisive issues that might turn off those moderate and swing voters needed to win elections. And they have the media on their side who refrain from asking liberal candidates uncomfortable questions about partial birth abortion, gays in the military, etc. allowing these candidates to wait until after they're elected before they show their stripes.

Meanwhile, conservative candidates have to field questions on rape and pregnancy or the age of the earth which they can either answer honestly and drive away millions of voters and give ham-fisted non-answers which make themselves look stupid.

“No one who runs on the platform of “going to make it absolutely illegal , by decree, once elected” is going to win a contest outside their own home, if that.”

If that is true, then America fully deserves the judgement that God will heap on her, and whether we manage to get someone elected in the meantime is pretty irrelevant.

Dear Senator McCain—

Since Roe vs. Wade, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 million American children have been turned into medical waste.

If someone believes that they weren’t actually children, that’s one thing. But someone like you, who claims to believe they were human, telling someone like me that I shouldn’t be concerned about it or make any moves to reduce or eliminate this murder spree, is just bizarre.

You’re basically satying, “Say murder is wrong, then shut your mouth about murder.” It’s like someone telling Frederick Douglass or Sojourner Truth to shut up about that whole slavery thing. Moreover, when we look at your statement apart from the moral dimension, we’ve tried your electoral methods for two elections now and have had our butts handed to us by a guy who couldn’t run a taco stand. But you blather on as if we’re the problem.

As one Freeper’s shakespearean tagline says, “You should have become wise before you became old.” You are unfit to lecture anyone on these issues. Please retire and go away.

Respectfully,
Mr. Silverback
