FEMA exploring idea of boats to house Sandy victims

Hoping to find a solution for New York and New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy, the federal government announced Thursday it was looking into the possibility of housing residents on boats.

In a request for information notice posted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said they were looking for input from the maritime industry in the hopes of finding rapid and cost-effective housing options on small boats or similar vessels.

FEMA said the purpose of the request was for market research only and to explore whether the maritime industry could offer viable options for residents who remain homeless.

Officials said the vessels they requested ideally would sleep two to six adults and could be standalone boats or interconnected to create a single dwelling made of multiple units.

As of Wednesday, 473,785 households in New York and New Jersey had applied for disaster relief assistance with FEMA. While not all of the families were requesting housing assistance, officials said they continue to work with state and local officials to help all victims of the deadly storm.

Fema used to have thousands of mobile trailers stored around the country for use in emergencies. I know they were selling a lot of them at reduced prices. Maybe they don't have facilities to park them in the area of need around NY/NJ.

THE FEMA LOVE SONG

(Or - We're the Government and We're Here to Help Ya)

We're gonna put ya in a slow boat in Jersey
All to yourself alone
Getcha and keep ya on the dole evermore
Leave all your problems
Here on the sweet Jersey shore
Bob on the briny
As you freeze off your heinie
Huddled and cold as a stone
We're gonna put ya in a slow boat in Jersey
Just till ya get your loan
(We're loaded with mersey)

We're here to help ya with a slow boat in Jersey
All to yourself alone
Getcha and keep ya on the dole evermore
You'll be provided with some rum and an oar
There's an ice-covered pier for you to go find a beer
For the head use a pail
Throw it over the rail
Get a chill, use a sail
Spring a leak, start to bail
Yep, we're here to house ya in a bay cold and misty
So, all thanks to FEMA
(and don't forget Christie)

Well, I guess that does away with the FEMA Camp conspiracy.

“Good grief...this is the best the US Government can come up with?”

FEMA’s incompetence in the wake of Katrina and Rita was manifest, especially when set alongside the actions of the state governments in Texas and Mississippi. The people who spoke up about were mocked, maligned or ignored. Nothing changed.

Perhaps with the victims of the incompetence being in the only part of the “Union” that matters - the Northeast - some superficial or transitory reforms will be made.

“The only part of any government that works as advertised is the military, and that only works as advertised when they are breaking things and killing people.”

Which current ROEs pretty much make impossible unless we are the de facto support for some jihadist faction or other.

Some cruise line brought some ships to the Gulf area after one of our hurricanes but no one wanted to live on the water so the ships left. Why are they trying it again? Didn’t work the first time.

Actually they used the cruise ships for several months after Katrina. In October 2005 there were more than 5000 “victims” living on the cruise ships at a cost to the government of over $200 per day per person. Here is an article:

It could be a gold mine for boat owners. Rent out your boat to FEMA for 1k a day and have it trashed.

Sort of related...a good friend of mine was a heavy haul trucker back during Katrina. He told me about FEMA paying him $1800/day to sit and wait for orders. He said they basically had a 24/7 party going at some of the big truck stops...occasionally get orders to pack up and move a couple hundred miles then start the party back up.
