This is the trouble with conservatives. They only see a problem when it gets to the final stages. They do not fight for the broad principles that matter, early on. Piling onto a single mother is not the answer. And if a family wants to send a kid to college, they need to start very early and sacrifice a lot. I know. I am a single mother and my kid has been in private schools for 24 years, about to complete the doctorate. I also finished my master’s in midlife. Not a cent in loans or scholarships for either of us, just hard work, lots of planning and sacrifice. Based on those experiences of mine, I know I have God and my parents to thank for giving me a backbone.
American youth have been having illegitimate children at an increasing rate for the past 40 years. Suddenly, conservatives have discovered this phenomenon, and they want to blame an individual, now that the entire welfare structure has re-elected a Socialist? Where were they when abortion was legalized, birth control was made freely available, prayer was taken out of the schools, adultery was decriminalized, and no-fault divorce and palimony were enabled? All those things happened in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Where were the conservatives and the Tea Party then?
This girl obviously did not have the luxury of a moral education that I had. Therefore I am looking at the larger problem here; that conservatives would rather attack each other or the victims of the society they have neglected to safeguard than to solve the problems when they are little. Conservatives have been asleep in the pews since Eisenhower. And now look.
