Kerosene Lamps Identified as Big Source of Black Carbon
Science Daily ^ | 11-28-12 | unattributed

The primary source of light for more than a billion people in developing nations is also churning out black carbon at levels previously overlooked in greenhouse gas estimates, according to a new study led by researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Illinois.

Results from field and lab tests found that 7 to 9 percent of the kerosene in wick lamps -- used for light in 250-300 million households without electricity -- is converted to black carbon when burned. In comparison, only half of 1 percent of the emissions from burning wood is converted to black carbon.

Factoring in the new study results leads to a twenty-fold increase in estimates of black carbon emissions from kerosene-fueled lighting. The previous estimates come from established databases used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and others. One kilogram of black carbon, a byproduct of incomplete combustion and an important greenhouse gas, produces as much warming in a month as 700 kilograms of carbon dioxide does over 100 years, the authors said

Well, obviously, dangerous kerosene lamps need to be banned. Glo-bull warming is YOUR fault for using kerosene lamps. The gov't will take care of you. No need to prep for anything.

During the late 40s and early 50s there was no electricity in rural NW Florida. I remember we had kerosene lanterns. Only a few years later Kerosene lanterns were so worthless that an auctioneer in Panama City could not give one away.

He finally told the crowd he would pay someone 25 cents to take it. This would have been around 1953. I raised my hand but a man did too. He probably would not have sold it to a six year old anyhow tho I doubt if sold is the right word.

Please note, the study did not mention lamp oil, which burns cleaner than kerosene. It’s also easier on your wicks. And Aladdin lamps are the way to go...no pumping and very little noise (man, I hate the sound of a Coleman lamp!)

I've heard of "carbon black" which the writer should have written if not clueless.

“lamp oil, which burns cleaner than kerosene”

yup, but price and utility lead me to kerosene as a backup. multiple uses, though the odor is annoying.

” - - - How many people have even heard of “black carbon”? - - - “

I am utterly stunned that you have broken the PC Rule that prohibits using the “b” word as a modifier to carbon.

What will the MSNBC-Moms do when their preppy children notice pure Carbon on the carved Liberal smiling lips of their “Holiday” pumpkins?

“Darker than night” might be a good substitute for the “b” word.

Another thing to be amazed they had to do a study over. Anyone fool can just burn a kerosene lamp and see the black carbon soot stains form after a while with their naked eyes. What do they think happens when you burn organic, carbon based chemicals?
