ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Good morning this rainy Sunday! This morning someone asked me, "How do you like the lousy weather, Chaplain?" I thought a moment about the fact that my uniform was wet, my car had trouble starting, and about all those poor people stuck in the wall of traffic that inevitably occurs when 58 gets drenched. Then later I thought, how would we exist without the rain which makes all life on our planet possible? I remembered the old prayer in my prayer book, a blessing to God for the gift of wind and rain.

There is an old story, a beautiful story, about a boy who came home famished after long hours of play with his friends. His mother served him some sandwiches which satisfied his hunger and caused him to thank his mom. She said, "Don't thank me, son, I only prepared the food." So he went to the grocer to thank him for the bread. "Don't thank me, young man, I only sell the food." He walked over to the baker and thanked him. "Son, you're thanking the wrong person, I only bake the bread." Wondering whom to thank, the boy went to the farmer to thank him. "Thank you for the fine bread that I eat every day," he said. "Don't thank me, my friend, I only plant the seeds. The earth, sunshine, rain, and wind make the wheat grow, not I.

By now the boy was tired and hungry so the farmer invited him to join his family for dinner. As they were seated around the table, each person took a piece of bread from the basket and said together: Praised be Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who brings bread out of the earth."

So, today, let's thank God for the sunny days and the rainy ones, too--as well as for the food He gives us. Each day is truly a blessing!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

We Need Hope

December 2, 2012

Adam and Eve didn’t need hope because they didn’t lack anything they needed. And they had every reason to think that life would go on as pleasantly as it started—with every good thing that God had given them to enjoy. But they put it all at risk for the one thing the serpent said that God had withheld: the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17; 3:5). So when the serpent came with his offer, Eve was quick to indulge, and Adam quick to follow (3:6). They got what they wanted: knowledge. But they lost what they had: innocence. With the loss of innocence came the need for hope—hope that their guilt and shame could be removed and goodness restored.

Christmas is the season of hope. Children hope for the latest popular toy or game. Families hope that everyone can make it home for the holidays. But the hope that Christmas commemorates is much bigger than our holiday desires. Jesus, the “Desire of All Nations” (Hag. 2:7), has come! He has “delivered us from the power of darkness,” bought our redemption, and forgiven our sins (Col. 1:13-14). He even made it possible for us to be wise about what is good and innocent about evil (Rom. 16:19). Christ in us gives us the hope of glory.

Praise God for the hope of Christmas!

What are the prospects for this earth?
What hope is there for man?
A world restored through Jesus Christ
In whom we see God’s plan. —D. DeHaan
Hope for the Christian is a certainty—
because its basis is Christ.

Read: Colossians 1:3-14

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. —Jeremiah 17:7

Galatians 4-6

Remember when you were a kid playing in the park during a really hot day?

Running wild for the water fountain between games. Pushing, shoving, never getting enough.

Imagine if the water fountain wasn’t there.

Now imagine if you had no freedom.

Very strange, isn't it? I hope you have had a nice Saturday! An excellent lesson this week - I've heard something similar to this before, but it bears to be sung out, frequently and resoundingly!

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

Good evening, teen...*HUGS*

Thanks, and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours and all your Marines.

This ping thing is very annoying, but I feel better knowing I’m not the only annoying poster.

Today was finger stick day...not too good. His # was 4.1! He should be between 2 and 3. She asked if he was eating greens...yes. Good! Eating mangoes, cranberries (and juice) and a bunch of other things...no. Hmmm...I told her he really wants to sleep and she said, to him....not so much sleeping, more exercising. This sleeping thing has become a real battle....most days my Mom can not get him up. I’m hoping that those words coming directly from the nurse poking his finger will work. Now it will not be my Mom or me telling him he has to walk more.
