Jo Ann Emerson to retire from U.S. House Monday, December 3, 2012 ~ Updated 10:55 AM From staff and wire reports

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau, announced today she will leave her Congressional post in February to become president and CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, a not-for-profit organization that represents rural electric cooperatives and public power districts.

The Associated Press reported that Missouri Republican Party Executive Director Lloyd Smith and former state treasurer Sarah Steelman confirmed interest in seeking the seat.

Emerson was re-elected in November for a ninth term to the U.S. House of Representatives in Missouri's Eighth District.

There is just so many things wrong with this. Why was she even on the ballot and taking contributions for re election, when this new venture was in the works anyway? They didn't just all of a sudden spring that job on her.

Don't blame anyone for doing better for themselves, but Ms. Emerson, shame on you for misleading your constituents.

This self-centered dimwit probably gets to keep all the left-over campaign cash too. Sheesh!

I think she can keep it, but not for personal benifits. Will there be another election or does the Governor get to pick.

You could see that one coming a mile away. She’s been their lapdog for years.

Special election. Nominating process, etc. Very time consuming. Could leave her District without Representation for months...

That leaves me speechless. What she has done is fraudulent, she knew that job was going to be offered her.

I have never approved of this kind of action by anyone. When elected you are to serve out your term, and NO crossovers until the next election when the electors have a fighting chance. Should be illegal to do either of these.

Was she any good anyway?

ACU rating lifetime-79%. Rated ‘A’ by GOA. But considered somewhat of a moderate Republican. I do not think Republicans are in danger of losing this Seat. Just and expen$ive process.

The only reason Ms. Emerson is in the House to begin with is because her husband (who held the seat for years) died from cancer while in office back in 1996. I’m amazed that one of their children isn’t running for the seat.

I’m a native of the Bootheel, and while I was never particularly impressed with the Emersons, they were an improvement over the Dim (Bill Burlison) who held that seat previously. Better yet, if the GOP plays its cards correctly, we could get Sarah Steelman as a replacement. Sarah should have been the Senate nominee last year; instead, Missourians are stuck with Claire McCaskill for at least six more years.

That is the DemocRAT way of playing politics here in the Soviet of Washington. The past 5 recent local state representatives and state senators in my area, all from the Rat party, use this method of getting elected, quit after winning thus allowing the local RAT party PCO’s the opportunity to SELECT 3 prospective replacements for the county commissioners or governor to SELECT from to finish out the term. Gives the SELECTED one the power of incumbency. A very ugly way to get the “team” your party wants.

The Emerson Bridge is quite a structure. Been across but twice.

Lloyd Smith was Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Emerson for a number of years. Also worked for her husband. However, Sarah Steelman has tremendous name recognition in the State.

I just knew there was a reason why I kept my STEELMAN sign!

I understand the Democrats doing this, it's just WHAT THEY ARE.

Emerson is a Republican isn't she, which makes it very repulsive.

Or are you saying, it's about time we started playing by their RULES? If that is it, let 'er rip. Let's open up that paybook, and use ALL THE RULES.

All's fair in Love and WAR. WE are at WAR now. So ALL IS FAIR and unaccountable to us.

According to Open Secrets, Congresswoman Emerson raised $1.4 million but only has $106K on hand.

But I still think it a safe Republican Seat. Sure hope so. After last month's butt-kicking we need some good news!!

Yep, she should be headed to the senate right now, but a congressional seat will do.

Good riddance to less than stellar conservative in a safe seat.

But the ninny should have retired instead of running again. She should pay for special election with her new salary and be flogged if anything of import fails to pass by 1 vote while the seat is vacant.

State Rep. Jason Smith won the GOP nomination at the convention, defeating Peter Kinder who foolishly ran.

Sarah Steelman had apparently dropped out. Barring a disaster, Smith should handily keep the seat GOP.
