Here's perspective, Bob:

Players, fans and journalists were praising and memorializing and paying tribute to a cowardly punk who murdered the defenseless mother of his own child.

Why would they do this?

If Jovan Belcher were a Waffle House cook and did this, no one in the media or in the general public would be mourning his loss, looking for scapegoats besides the murderer himself, talking fondly about how the murderer was such a wonderful colleague at work, etc.

His mea culpa, such as it is, is that he didn’t have enough time to pontificate further, not that he shouldn’t have brought up his self-righteous screed at all.

Maybe the problem is that this country is too addicted to its sports. We raise up athletes who use their God-given talents to good effect, treat them like demigods, then pay them ungodly amounts of money. And, to make matters worse, we pay otherwise useless people to tell us what it is we are watching.
