Questions Surround $55 Million Program to Cut Violence in Chicago
CNN ^ | Dec. 3, 2012 | Scott Zamost

On a chilly afternoon this fall, teenagers across Chicago's South Side were busy at work, earning $8.75 an hour to hand out fliers with a message of non-violence.

"Our message that we're giving out today is about being healthy," said 18-year-old Lucia Eloisa. "One of the key pointers is about taking time to reflect and seek inner peace."

Eloisa's part-time job was paid for by an ambitious state-funded program to keep at-risk teenagers out of trouble. It pumped nearly $55 million into Chicago's toughest neighborhoods and three of its suburbs to stem unrelenting gang violence.

A four-month CNN investigation found that not only did the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI) pay teens to hand out fliers promoting inner peace, it also paid these at-risk teens to take field trips to museums, march in a parade with the governor, and even attend a yoga class to learn how to handle stress.

Yoga classes to “handle stress?” Marching in a parade with the gov? Hading out flyers?

Another total waste of $55 million. If this isn’t learned in the home/church (right, good luck) with respect for the right to life and property, then they’re wasting taxpayers money. Sounds like a community organizer project . . . waste of time and money.

>> attend a yoga class to learn how to handle stress.

Hey, that could come in handy later, when they’re forty years old and starving their way through an economic collapse.

$55 mill would have paid for a lot of police officers. Why are we not classifying gangs as terrorist organizations and round ‘em up and send ‘em to gitmo? That is what they are?

Power hungry thugs making thousands a week selling drugs and willing to kill over perceived slights from other thugs will read these fliers and give it all up?

WHAT A JOKE! What a laughable joke. What an insane, laughable joke. What a stupid, insane laughable joke.

On top of that, most of the targeted people are unable to read the fliers, thanks to the bankrupt public school system in Chicago.

And they wonder why Chi town is out of money.

Just sayn’

They don’t mind because the majority don’t have any taxable income. Harsh but true. The money will ultimately come from the US Government, in other words, the rest of us. ;-)

This is exactly how the DNC voting machine works. It is all about Social Justice, Social Gospel, Saul Alinksy- progressive church movement, buying votes- laundering money, race pimps, hustlers and cons. These are Obama’s people and his hood.

Hree is just one more guy, from a google search. Look up John Perkins center, and Woodlawn. It is all the same people- pushing redisrtibution of wealth and stealing our tax money, while calling us racists and disrupting our society.

Politically motivated or not, it's hard to argue that the nearly $55 million spent on the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative helped stem violence in Chicago. Two years after the program was implemented, there have been 476 murders in the city, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2011.

Well, the obvious political answer is to double-down on the program. *sheesh* what a waste.

For cripes sake, at least make them work for the money, like the old CCC. This is total BS. What else to expect, more redistribution?

Perhaps the money would be better spent PROMOTING Chicago violence. It’s somewhat self-limiting if allowed to run rampant, like a parasite that kills its host.
