Social Media, Terrorism Connect Too Well

SNIPPET: "Social media is no longer simply a fun way to share updates on the harmless idiosyncrasies of our lives. It can undermine national security, and there ought to be a more robust discussion between the Bay Area technology world and Washington on what to do about it.

Cyber-terrorism, especially the potential for electronic tampering with U.S. industrial or military installations, is a paramount national security threat that Washington is working to forestall. We're all working to protect our accounts from hackers. But the cyber-threat getting far less public attention involves the social media networks we use every day and the potential they have to trigger an unexpected crisis."

“Dig the hole in advance”
(December 20, 2012)

SNIPPET: “Last night on Twitter the point was made that at least the State Department held people accountable for the sacking of the consulate in Benghazi, unlike the CIA after the suicide bombing at Khowst. I suggested that there was a lot of blame to go around in the latter instance, and since the individuals most responsible for Khowst were among the victims of the bombing, I was disinclined to blame the dead for trying too hard.”

SNIPPET: “We could argue over when the disaster at Khowst really began, but certainly one point of departure was the arrest of al Khorasani in Jordan. It was supposed to be a secret. However, he had a neighbor who was also a jihadi, and who saw him being taken away. The neighbor dutifully logged into the al Hesbah forum and posted a message that the respected brother Abu Dujanah al Khorasani had been captured. Goodness only knows what happened to the neighbor, because al Hesbah was a forum that had been created by the Agency in cooperation with the Saudis, and the thread about al Khorasani’s capture was deleted almost immediately.

Having witnessed the posting of the news and its deletion, I knew two things:

1) Al Khorasani had been captured, and
2) Al Hesbah was compromised”

“Suspected terrorist slain in Davao was JI Facebook recruit, Malaysia news site says”

December 21, 2012 7:14am

SNIPPET: “The suspected terrorist who was killed in Davao City last weekend was a “Facebook recruit” of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network, a Malaysian news site reported.

“Kedah-born Mohd Noor Fikrie, 26, was in touch with Marwan and the Abu Sayyaf via social media and used a Sabahan contact to travel between Sandakan and Zamboanga City in southern Philippines,” the report said.

It cited intelligence sources who said Fikrie was with top JI leader and fellow Malaysian Zulkifli Abdul Hir a.k.a. Marwan and Abu Sayyaf terrorists during encounters with Philippine military and police in the past few months.”

“Amazon.com Sells Sermons, Inspirational Islamic Teachings Of Dead Al-Qaeda Leader –Yemeni-American Sheikh Anwar Al-Awlaki; Available For Kindle Too”

Introduction

Radical U.S.-born Yemeni-American cleric and leading Al-Qaeda figure Anwar Al-Awlaki, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in September 2011, was an important mentor for jihadis, inspiring lone wolf attacks such as the November 2009 Fort Hood shooting, the attempted Christmas Day 2010 airplane bombing over Detroit, and the 2010 attempted Times Square bombing.[1]

Most of Al-Awlaki’s sermons and teachings can be found free of charge on jihadi forums, and there are countless videos of him on YouTube; however, some of his seminal works are also offered for sale by Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer.”

“New jihadist group emerges in Syria”
By BILL ROGGIO
December 27, 2012 12:34 PM

JSNIPPET: “Jund al Sham (Soldiers of the Levant), a new Salafi jihadist group in Syria, announced its formation in the Syrian city of Homs on Dec. 23, in a statement published on the group’s Facebook page, according to the SITE Intelligence Group. Jund al Sham’s media arm, Sada al Sham, also released two subsequent statements announcing the goals of the group, SITE reported.

The group’s emir is identified as Abu Suleiman al Muhajir; his nom de guerre — Muhajir, or ‘immigrant’ — indicates he may be a foreigner. His real identity is unknown.”

SNIPPET: “However, in one of the two other statements released by Jund al Sham’s media arm, another official, Abu Abdul Rahim al Muhajir, suggests that the group is supportive of jihad in other theaters outside of Syria.”

SNIPPET: “The name ‘Jund al Sham’ is not new to the Levant, which includes Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories.”

“The Ansar al-Sharia Threat
Libyan militia behind Benghazi terror attack still operating unimpeded”

BY: Bill Gertz
December 31, 2012 5:00 am

SNIPPET: “Ansar al-Sharia, the Islamist militia linked to the deadly terror attack against the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, continues to operate Facebook pages and conduct fundraising and proselytize in Libya, according to U.S. officials.

Intelligence reports provided to the U.S. Africa Command earlier this month revealed that Ansar al-Sharia operates several Facebook pages, including one outlet called the Campaigns of Ansar al-Sharia for Dawa and Charity. The website was operating as late as Dec. 15 before being shut down under pressure from the U.S. government.”
