Nearly 6 in 10 young voters support bigger government — a worrisome statistic for conservatives who want to increase their presence on college campuses and among the under-30 crowd. According to the Pew Research Center, 59 percent of young voters think the government should do more — something only 44 percent of all voters support.

Of course. Most young voters have just spend 13 to17 years of brain washing by the teachers unions. It usually takes some time to recover from that. It took me a couple of years.
Ignorance and immaturity. Young voters want big government because they have been conditioned to believe that there will always be someone out there to take care of them as a substitute mommy and daddy (by the way, a lot of older voters belive that too). But they fail to realize that by the time they become older voters, the system will have collapsed so that all “Big Government” will have accomplished is to transfer money from them to older voters (who will be dead at that point) and they will never get that money back.
The problem is, Chip and Muffy want BIG government but they don’t want to pay for it. They want someone else to pay for it. Very un-American.

So what’s new? I’d be willimng to bet that you would have found similar polling numbers at campuses all across the country anytime in the last 100 years. They’re young and emotional. Many of them will outgrow their stupidity.

In the future when Chip and Muffy get their first paychecks after college will they question why 50 percent of their pay is taken in taxes?
Not surprising when you let the big government types control their newsmedia, education system and entertainment.
Not really. Youth are painfully aware that they can't do much on their own—they have no connections, reputation, adult skills. They love the idea that they can get behind "political change," which means the state doing something at their behest. I was that way, too.
Then they get a few years older and have more power and influence, and they see what the servants of the state do with theirs. A lot of minds change. We should raise the voting age again—but evangelizing the young about liberty and justice will help in any case.
“Okay, let them pay for it......”
The same can be said of the fiscal cliff, let the RATS raise taxes (under protest by Repubs) and give people what they voted for. If they want big govt let them pay for it.
Ergo, most young voters are stupid...
I think things have gotten worse. If you would have asked a young person 100 years ago whether government should help the poor or the elderly, they would have said yes. But then we started down a slippery slope to the point where young, healthy people thing government should take care of them -- pay for their birth control and other things they want even if they have the means to work and pay for these things themselves. Kids from 100 years ago probably would be shocked at how badly the Welfare State has corrupted the work ethic. Think back to the 50s and 60s. Young people from back then simply assumed they would have to work and support themselves. Young people today don't necessarily think that.
Plus, they haven’t seen any of the cost of the big government - only the “benefits” - to this point in their lives.
Examine some of Pew’s other findings:
“Only 44% of white voters under 30 backed Obama, while 51% voted for Romney.”
Think about this, in that what Pew has suggested is that they supported Romney, but wanted larger government?
“A majority (59%) said that the government should do more to solve problems, while 37% said the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals.
That is a somewhat narrower margin than in 2008 (69% vs. 27%).”
So the truth may be that 6% *fewer* young people want government to do more than they did just four years ago.
That is a big drop in just four years, among the people most likely to want bigger government. Not bad news at all.
