Meet Tim Scott, The Man Conservatives Want To Replace Jim DeMint (Nikki Haley can appoint him)

Tim Scott, a U.S. Representative from South Carolina, is quickly becoming the favorite to replace South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint, who announced his resignation from Congress Thursday morning.

CNN's Peter Hamby first reported that DeMint — who leaves to head up the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank — wants Scott to be his replacement. It's a choice that makes sense to conservatives as South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley prepares to make an appointment.

Whomever Haley appoints will hold the seat until a special election is held in 2014 to pick a permanent replacement to fill DeMint's seat.

There are a number of reasons Scott looks to be the favorite. His potential appointment would make him the only African-American member of the Senate. He is also described as a bona fide conservative who is viewed favorably by the Tea Party types of his party.

Erick Erickson, a prominent conservative blogger and founder of RedState.com, immediately put Scott's name forward Thursday:

Good stuff.

With Allen West out of Congress for now, it would be a good move for Tim Scott to have a higher profile, IMO.

That would be a nice parting gift from De Mint. I haven’t had the chance to hear Scott speak much, but his record and positions look solid. As the only black in the Senate, he’d have a pretty nice platform.

Tim Scott is an incredibly brilliant idea. I really like him and my own interactions with him and his staff have been very helpful.

But she will reward a staffer with the seat instead.

If Scott is being touted to replace DeMint because Scott is black and can therefore make some Republicans feel good about themselves, I’m against it.

If Scott is being touted because he is the most conservative candidate out there to replace DeMint, I am on board.

I’m as sick and tired of the racial and ethnic identity politics as I am the class and gender warfare.
