Young Mexican police chief who fled drug cartels seeking asylum in the US

As the bodies of her former law-enforcement colleagues pile up in Mexico’s violent drug wars, former small-town police chief Marisol Valles Garcia is fighting for asylum in the United States.

“I thought I could make a difference,” Valles says of her decision at age 20 to become the top cop in Praxedis Guadalupe Guerrero, a dusty town of 9,000 in the Chihuahua region, just south of the US border.

Two of her predecessors were executed, and the job was vacant for a year before Valles, a criminal-justice student, took it.

But she, too, was vulnerable to the intense violence of the drug wars, and two years ago decided to flee to Texas, where she now works 12-hour shifts at a pecan-processing factory to support her toddler and five relatives. WAY TOO HOT: Small-town mayor Maria Santos Gorrostieta (above) has been murdered and the doors of a police station sprayed with bullets in the year and a half since once-celebrated Mexican police chief Marisol Valles Garcia (below) was run out of the country by drug cartels and came to the US.

Her first immigration hearing is scheduled for next summer. Still, she told The Post, “We are grateful to be alive, to have security.”

Valles, now 22, made worldwide headlines in 2010 when she bravely took over as Praxedis police chief.

With a ‘living and breathing Constitution’, we could have a country like Mexico too.

I’m all for giving her asylum. She will be an asset to the U.S.

Amen. One of my best line cooks was a former cop in Mexico City. Problem was, he wasn't dirty, and was almost killed a couple of times. He finally left Mexico (legally) and came here to be a cook.

Between me and him, all of the thieving in the restaurant I was managing just went away.

I doubt she’ll be given asylum...

Having taken the tough police job she shows courage and independence. Not likely to be a “taker”. “producer” Mexicans are currently not wanted in the US... only those that the govt can make into dependents...

Nope,sorry...no can do.Even if this guy is,in fact,a decent and respectable guy (distinctly possible,IMO) we can't be letting every Mexican who fears violence into the country.Otherwise,Mexico's population would drop to 20,000 in a matter of months.

What I can support are measures on *both* sides of the border that would choke off the drug trade, thus making the slaughter unnecessary.First, both sides build a wall (one on each side of the border),from the Pacific to the Gulf, that would resemble the Berlin Wall in terms of effectiveness. The purpose of *our* wall would be to prevent people *and* drugs from entering the US.The purpose of *their* wall would be to prevent people, money and guns from entering Mexico.

I am sure the Obama regime will not grant asylum.

Maybe you should have read the story. It’s about a 22 year old woman.

There’s something confusing about this. The article says she became the police chief when she was 20 years old. Then it says that she fled to Texas two years ago, and she is currently 22 years old. It makes me wonder how many days or weeks after accepting the police position did she decide it was too dangerous and her only recourse was to flee to the United States?

It could all be totally legitimate, and not a pre-planned exercise in getting herself and 4 family members across the border before giving birth to her child. But I’m simply feeling a little skeptical today.

She was in the news when it happened. She was only police chief for a short time.

I’m not implying that she was never the police chief. I remember when she accepted the position and we had a great thread about it here on FR. She knew that her two predecessors had been murdered. In fact, the second one had been beheaded and his head delivered to the police station in a cooler! I remember reading on the FR thread at the time that the police chief in this town was not allowed to carry a firearm.

Obviously she knew it was an unimaginably dangerous position to accept at the time she agreed to it. What I’m asking is, how long after she accepted the position did she flee to Texas and ask for political asylum? From this article, it appears to have been a matter of weeks. That’s what makes me skeptical about motivation.

She’s still alive? Wow.
