Hundreds of Saturday afternoon customers at a Sacramento shopping center witnessed a tense three-hour standoff at a Jack in the Box restaurant, which ended with a robbery suspect shot by Sacramento police sharpshooters.

------------------------cut----------------------

Dan Escamilla had just sat down to lunch at El Festival taqueria behind the Jack in the Box. A bail agent from Orange County, he was visiting the area in search of a violent felony fugitive.

Still wearing her headset from the drive-through window, a female Jack in the Box employee rushed into the taqueria and said the nearby restaurant was being robbed, Escamilla said.

"The (woman) came into the restaurant yelling, 'There's a guy with a gun and he's inside the Jack in the Box right now,' " Escamilla said. "So I ran and got my gun and my (protective) vest (from the car) to see if there was something that I could do to help."

---------------------cut----------------------

Just as he reached the back entrance to the Jack in the Box, a second woman - another restaurant employee - burst out and told him the robber had put a gun in her mouth.

"I told her to get out of there quick," Escamilla said.

The bail agent then secured the back door until police arrived about two minutes later.

If I understand the New York (city) law well enough, that wouldn’t do it. They have to show how they, alone, face circumstances above and beyond others in their own situation. (I.e. Regular Joe bail agents need not apply.)

IME they get no better treatment than any of the rest of us. It is very much dependent on which county you live in. Rural counties, no probroblem. SoCal, not a chance.

Bail agents who have them are mostly retired LEOs

I am sure you are correct about how NYC law is applied, but this is California.

I had a couple of private investigators/bail agents attend my class in Arizona (they were collecting CCW permits). They were from San Diego, and both had California permits, hard to obtain in that city.

I realize this was in CA.

BTW this is one of the very few types of situations in which I fully support use of SWAT methods and tactics. If innocents are at risk, I support the police being able to do whatever they need to do to stop the threat. Citizens too, for that matter. (As is the law in CO, for example.)

The bail guy was taking a big risk of being shot by cops.

I used to live around there.

Used to... for good reason.

Sounds to me like a suicide by cop situation.

Jack-in-the-Box might want to advertise in Californicate that they have additional protection (bail bond agents) whereas McDonalds only has local police.

Unfortunately, his cover is now blown as well-whoever he was looking for is probably long gone by this time....
