Secession petitions: Why Americans don't really want to break up
BBC News ^ | Sunday, December 9, 2012

Independence movements are on the march in many Western countries, but the secessionists who have been making news in the US since last month's election are not, realistically, going anywhere. Americans are, in fact, unusually keen to stick together. Why is this?

The USA is a divided country, we're often told, polarised in a cultural civil war between the blue and red bits on its map.

Unlike almost all of their Western counterparts, however, Americans appear remarkably happy to stay together despite their differences.

While separatist parties are thriving in Canada and Europe, recent bids to take individual states out of the union have only served to demonstrate just how little appetite there is for this kind of politics in the US.

A series of petitions has been posted on the White House website calling for each of the 50 states to be allowed to secede.

So far Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma and Ohio have all attracted more than 25,000 names apiece - entitling them an official response from the administration.

I want to break up and I have since Obama was selected. I seriously think we should become two separate countries.

Another factor that may put a brake on centrifugal tendencies in the US is its federal constitution, which allows the 50 states considerable autonomy.

Hahahahahahahahaha, etc.

They’re not going to let us go because they need our money.

Poor section of Spain leaves no one cares - they weren’t pulling their weight anyway.

Walter Williams has been calling for a National Divorce for a while now.

Nothing too messy. But its clear the U.S. cannot continue as it is and remain a peaceful country.

agree, let all those socialist states go on their own and give them their socialist utpopia whilst others like down south and parts of the midwest and AK have our own place.

All conservatives need to move to places like VA, NC, FL, CO, NM and get out of the socialist states and stop giving them money and move to states where their votes do count.

MA,IL, RI, CT, CA, OR, WA are all lost and let them live in their pig swill but only if the illegals, union goons, cross dressing queers, commies etc all move to their new utopia.

This country is not what it used to be and never will.

Americans are, in fact, unusually keen to stick together.

Tinkerbell propaganda hoping those drolling in cups buy this....The U.S. Government has been intentionally flooding the U.S. with tens of millions of foreigners, Muslims, illegal aliens etc, etc for over 30 years now.

They have intentionally divided the united which makes it easier for government to control the divided.

No one buys this kind of propaganda anymore.

If you could first know where you are and whither you are tending, you could better judge what to do and how to do it. You initiated a policy to tolerate the Marxist-Alinsky radicals and let them rant; not only has it not ceased but was constantly augmented by decades of infiltration and indoctrination. You now have two Americas. In my opinion, it will not cease until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half statist and half free; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.

The question today is either the opponents of statism will arrest the further spread of it and place it on course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become permanent.

Have you no tendency to the latter condition?

Let anyone who doubts carefully contemplate the now almost complete legal combination — piece of machinery, so to speak — compounded of the Republican Party hands-across-the-aisle doctrine and the dreadful actions among statism's chief architects.

The other America.. our elite ruling class New Normal

About to become permanent as the only America?

It used to be “United we stand. Divided we fall.” Now it’s just the opposite.

With the 2012 election showing the takers overwhelming the makers, and America jumping headlong into a foreign-style marxist/redistributionist ideology, not to mention the cultural devolution into depravity with things like gay marriage... all I can say is that now, for the first time in my life, I’m viewing myself more as a Texan, and not an American.

It’s not my first choice, but I’m increasingly open to secession as a viable end-game.
