Shrewsbury man defends action against anti-Obama protestors

Shrewsbury resident Carl Lund.

Northborough, MA – When Carl Lund saw a table set up on Main Street in Northborough on Friday, Dec. 7, he was “disgusted” he said, to see a poster of President Barack Obama, depicted as Adolf Hitler, prominently displayed.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” Lund, a resident of Shrewsbury and a Vietnam veteran, said.

Lund then got into a verbal confrontation with the two men manning the table, who Northborough police identified as Ian Brinkley and Jared Caskill.

“[Brinkley and Caskill] claimed it was a peaceful, political display with literature,” Lund said. “I disagreed. I thought it was a despicable, disrespectful display.”

Lund admits that he became angry and kicked the table over.

“They said they would call the police,” he recalled. “I told them to go ahead.”

When the police arrived, he gave them his information and left. Lund, who owns a business he runs out of his home, Heritage Home Carpentry, said he never imagined that the story would then go viral, attracting attention from several Boston TV stations and local media outlets.

“But I have also gotten calls from former and current customers supporting me. Friends have called with offers of support, too,” he said.

Lund stresses that he is “not political.”

“I did not do this as a political statement or even a ‘veteran’s’ statement,” he said. “I was not trying to represent anyone other than myself. It was a personal statement.”

Now, several days after the incident, Lund is pragmatic about what happens next. As of Thursday morning, Dec. 12, he had not received any official notification that he would be charged with any offenses.

“I’ve been told I will receive a summons but I haven’t gotten that yet,” he said. “But whatever happens, I am ready. You need to take responsibility for your actions good or bad and I do.”

“It did not matter who was depicted in that picture,” he said. “What matters is that it was the president of the United States, our chief executive officer, depicted as one of the most villainous people of modern times. It showed absolutely no respect for the office of the presidency.”

Adding to the insult, Lund said, was that the incident happened on the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

“I had been thinking about that earlier in the day and about the people who died that day in the service of our country,” he added.

Lund acknowledges that some have asked him if the two men should have been allowed to freely display their information under the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and the right to peacefully assemble.

“I think the bigger conversation is why can you not deface the American flag, currency or coinage but you can deface the image of the president?” he asked. “We have laws to respect other rights but not this?”

“We also have to remember that in this country, the majority rules,” he added. “Even if you don’t agree with the outcome of an election, the majority rules. And I believe it doesn’t matter who is in office, you need to respect the office.”

After Obama’s done with America, it will be an insult to Hitler to draw a Hitler stash on Obama’s face.

Where was this assclown when the left were doing this to Bush?

Was he asleep during those 8 years?

“We also have to remember that in this country, the majority rules,” - Lund, article

No, this is a republic and the law, not the majority, rules. The law of our land is political speech is a right.

He is guilty of a civil rights violation and probably assault/battery in my opinion.

"...I think the bigger conversation is why can you not deface the American flag, currency or coinage but you can deface the image of the president?” he asked. “We have laws to respect other rights but not this..."

Damned hypocritical liberal rumpswab.

I live up here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts. I have to walk through scummy places like Cambridge, and see garbage like this:

...or this...

Or crap like this:

I am, as a conservative, expected to walk by this liberal tripe, and not assault them or even confront them.

And I do.

But this infantile liberal twinkie thinks he has a right, and many of his liberal supporters do too, to do what he did.

HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO BET THIS JERK WASN'T DEFENDING "THE IMAGE OF THE PRESIDENT” WHEN BUSH WAS IN OFFICE AND HE PASSED PEOPLE HOLDING POSTERS WITH THE ABOVE IMAGES?

Boy, does this just burn me up. I detest liberalism in all of its facets, and the ball-washers like this turd.

In Germany, in 1945, after the dust and death had settled from all the bombing and wreckage that the narcissist, Hitler had rained down on the German people; those Germans left alive abhorred themselves and repented in dust and ashes for allowing an imposter to use them to elevate himself in a strange and demented way. - Check on this guy in a few years after we’ve had time to count the ways Hussein has “fundamentally transformed America”. I guess Hitler meant well, in a strange and demented sort of way.

“I think the bigger conversation is why can you not deface the American flag, currency or coinage but you can deface the image of the president?” he asked. “We have laws to respect other rights but not this?”

That is because the person sitting in the office is NOT the OFFICE of the Presidency. There have been some real stinkers who sat in that office, and citizens have every right to voice their opinions of the person in office.

“We also have to remember that in this country, the majority rules,” he added. “Even if you don’t agree with the outcome of an election, the majority rules. And I believe it doesn’t matter who is in office, you need to respect the office.

He also doesn't seem to understand the concept of the REPUBLIC. America is not a Democracy, so 'majority rule' is not the way of things. Yes, the office should be respected, but if the person IN that political office is acting in a disrespectful manner toward the office, we have an obligation to point that out, whether we're in the political minority or majority.

This man is from my town, but I don't know him personally. I'm sure he got plenty of support from folks around here though, because for the most part, MA went for Obama.

He explains that we have laws protecting the currency and flag, but no law to protect the image of his president? We should make all images of Muslim communist Presidents, especially if they are foreigners and have black skin, holy.

Fatso with the beard in commieland Masshole will beat you up if you don’t worship the image of his messiah. Too bad he did not get his you know what kicked. We call all hope.

What I don’t understand is why people still use the legal system to stop people from assaulting them. The legal system, as far as my experience can tell, sucks up money and perpetuates itself with no service(except maybe lip service) to the public it milks.

They should have played the drum solo from “Wipe Out” on his head.

Problem is; Democrats don’t choose to understand what the Republic is, hence we have Democrats and Republicans. So the Democrats do what democracies do; vote themselves gifts from the treasury till the democracy is broke, but in this case, until the republic is broke.

Seems like most of us where I grew up stopped using “majority rules” in a debate along about 5th or 6th grade. Also explains the maturity lacking in the minds of the liberal Democcrats.
