Teacher Faces Suspension for Sharing Bible Verse (NJ)

A longtime substitute teacher in Phillipsburg, NJ, faces a 90-day suspension after he was accused of sharing a Bible verse with a student – and then giving the child a Bible.

The Phillipsburg School Board said Walter Tutka broke two policies – distributing religious literature on school grounds and another policy that directs teachers to be neutral when discussing religious material. The controversy has generated outrage among the region’s religious community – with many claiming that Tutka is being “persecuted” for simply being a Christian. The electrical company retiree is a well-respected member of the community.

“Just remember, son,” Tutka told the tardy student, “The first shall be last but the last shall be first.” A few days later the student asked about the origins of the quote. Tutka told him it was in the Bible. “Over the next few weeks, the young student asked about a half dozen times where the quote was from in the Bible,” Imhof told Fox News. “Walt kept forgetting to look it up.” On Oct. 12th, Tutka was eating lunch in the cafeteria when the student approached and brought up the Bible verse. So Tutka took out his Bible and showed the student the verse. At some point the student mentioned that he did not have a Bible. “Walt basically said, ‘would you like mine?” Imhof said. “The student said yes and so Walt gave him his personal New Testament.” It’s unclear who reported Tutka to administration officials. But several days later he was summoned to the front office and Tutka, who had subbed for 28 out of the last 30 days, was sent home. To date, he has not been called back. The school superintendent did not return multiple calls seeking comment.

I absolutely hate NJ.

This is only one of many reasons I try never to step foot into that state.

They are right, the word of God is very powerful. Interesting that they are so frightened by it.

Isn’t having the “messiah” and Jamie Foxx’s “lord and savior in the White House a violation of the separation of church and state? That bass turd Obama is “unconstitutional”. Singing songs praising Obama in public schools is an OUTRAGE!

Silly Goose. Should have been a Quanza handout or perhaps a Mooselimb brochure. Can't have that Christian stuff handed out.

Which is why state schools are dying and home schooling is thriving.

Should have given him a Koran verse and a Koran. Would have been okay.

Who knew Phillipsburg was full of anal Leftists. I bet these scumbags would have no problem permitting Satanic text.

Time that the citizens/taxpayers of Phillipsburg fought back and destroyed that school board.

Take no prisoners. Hire people who have common sense and believe in America.

I've read there were some schools sending kids home that wore red and green somewhere in their dress during Christmas season. The school actually came out stating no student could wear the colors red and green together in any combination.

I am so looking forward to the Final Judgement where these people have to stand before G-d and defend their position. It's going to be a sorry sight.

Of course everyone knows that the US government printed thousands of Bibles in the early 1800's AND ALSO DESIGNATED LANDS FOR CHURCH LOTS.

And there were plenty of Town Meetings held in the local church....way back then...before everyone got hot about Jefferson and his separation of church and state "concept".

Reminds me of the idiot atheist on Varney on fox business (I think it was today or yesterday); when asked if had every made the same kind of protest against islam he just sat there, hummanahummuna like jackie gleason - big pause. The other guest was a Dem establishment woman - even she was laughing with Varney at the idiot.

Athiests go all off on religion - just Christianity - no other religion.

What idiots.

Jesus is the Word. That is why they don’t want His name mentioned either.

Truthfully, these have been the ground rules for thirty or more years, and this teacher showed very poor judgment in doing what they did.

Way back when I knew a very religious and scholarly high school teacher who was the soul of diplomacy to get permission to teach a “The Bible as Literature” class. His classes were filled with several denominations of Christians, as well as Jews, Mormons and some secular students that were respectful of religion.

He had to begin each semester with an extensive and complex disclaimer, and was always solicitous of the views and feelings of his pupils. Again, diplomacy won the day, offended no one, and produced a superb and intelligent class, far beyond what can typically be found in high school.

And he and his students were able to do this because they followed the rules. And within the rules they were able to do a lot more than they could by skirting the rules.

Of course the Bible - I would imagine particularly the King James’ version - was a staple of education centuries before our own. It was one of the main tools of learning to read.

The ACLU has alot to answer for.

Did you read the whole story? The man simply gave the kid his bible after the kid was pestering him about certain verses. No more, nothing less.

Eternity is more important than stupid rules. Why was it okay when I was in elementary school for my teachers to read the Bible every morning and say a short prayer? Look at schools now. Not much difference than juvenile detention centers. Coincidence? I obey God’s laws before man’s.
