Both bangs and pops were used to describe the sounds. Sound descriptions can be varied and incorrect, particularly when distanced and amidst distress & chaos: Essentially hearsay compared to Medical Examiners’ actual findings which are supported by the reported number of rounds fired off in such a short time and the extent/nature of injuries. Again, note the ME said “long weapon,” never specified a bushmaster (it appears the suspect had one in his trunk, yet, TMK, official investigators have yet to publically confirm precisely what weapon was used).
