Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of "black boxes" in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”

The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs) – so-called “black box devices” -- to collect specific safety related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said approximately 96 percent of model year 2013 passenger cars and light-duty vehicles are already equipped with black-box capability...

Onstar already sends me emails giving me a diagnostics report on my pickup truck. They know everything..... miles, tire pressure, etc. And of course they know where I’m at 24/7 and prolly how fast I drive.

This raises an interesting point: when Obama tries to rule by edict, instead of by laws passed by congress, valid arguments have been made in other situations that these edicts have no force in the law.

For example, what if a talented mechanic offered to disable the black box? Has he committed a crime by violating a presidential edict?

Right now, while vehicles with “black boxes” are not supposed to be able to function without them, and tampering with them voids the vehicles warranty, that is it. It is not a criminal or civil offense. If you can tamper with them and the vehicle still works, good for you, especially if the warranty has expired.

I bet somewhere in the fine print of the rules is a provision that the black boxes collect information about where and when you drive so you can be taxed for carbon emissions and road use fees based on miles driven. You will have no privacy to go where and when you want.

We all knew combining the ideology of a hard left statist with the methods of the Chicago political mob was going to be big trouble.

And we’re watching it play out in horriffic fashion, like a train wreck of the country.

You will have to send in a printout when you file your income taxes. They will also use the data when the gubmint takes over auto insurance.

“I see a new market for “Black Box Cleanser’s”.”

I agree. I would pay good money to have someone rig mine to show that I was traveling at nearly the speed of light most of the time I was in the car.

...taxed for carbon emissions and road use fees based on miles driven.

My state already puts that info into the computer during every annual inspection.

The way to drive white people onto public transportation (where Eric Holder’s people can target them for games of “Knockout King”) is to make vehicles so expensive that they cannot afford them.

Someone please explain the difference in issuing an edict such as this and a dictator?

I suspect there may be a market in disconnecting these things!

Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) Inquisitor: “Your automobile black box says you were you driving in a Red District when you had your accident. Why were you in a Red District?”
Accident Victim: “I was visiting my parents.”
IPA Inquisitor: “How did you vote in the last election?”
Accident Victim: “I voted for the Tea Party candidate.”
IPA Inquisitor: “Hospitalization denied because you are a danger to The State. Bailiff, give him the Red Pill and take him to Room 101. Next?”

Will the black box record the fact that the driver is distracted with: (a) texting, (b) wolfing down a mcbiscuit, (c) fiddling with GPS, (d) fiddling with the passenger, (e) passenger ... with the driver, (f) putting on makeup, (g) all of the above. Probably not. Box will record only mechanical issues?

Progressive “SnapShot” flash drive anyone?

Well, this just may change my whole viewpoint on that new vehicle....

The question I have is why did he feel the need to bypass congress? What’s coming that he can’t wait for appropiate legislation to be passed?

Obam-auto. Mainly because all the illegals with their free phones and drivers’ licenses will need free insurance to go along with their free cars. The rest of us will get a free pass to walk or take the treadmill.

Since this is unconstitutional, I am within my rights to rip it out. That is, IF I buy another car.
