With President Obama poised to decide whether to allow construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline -- based on a second, more environmentally-sensitive path -- critics now appear focused on derailing the project over a climate change study.
TransCanada Corp. submitted a revised application after the president rejected the first one in January because it took the 1,700-mile-long pipeline across an aquifer in Nebraska.
However, environmental groups say producing oil from Alberta tar sands releases more carbon dioxide than conventional drilling, which would increase global warming, and that studies on the first application were inadequate.
Jeremy Symons, of the National Wildlife Federation, said Sunday the original assessment by the State Department underestimated the amount of greenhouse gas. And he called on the Environmental Protection Agency to do a more complete assessment on the second application.
“We need an honest reassessment, and it’s up to the president to look at all environmental impacts,” he told FoxNews.com.
Symons also suggested the State Department “ducked” the greenhouse emissions issue to avoid the politically sensitive debate about climate change.
The pipeline would transport the oil from Canada and Western states to Gulf Coast refiners.
Supporters argue the project would help the United State lessen its dependency on foreign oil, create thousands of construction jobs and that it has already passed the environmental test.

Let me guess. The “critics” want to conduct the “study” with government grants and want to take 5 to 10 years to complete it.
Build the pipeling to within a few feet of the border in both directions. Build a giant fill station on the Canadian side and a giant dump area on the US side and let giant shuttle trucks take the crude across the border. SCREW the SOS!

Remember it was they and their ‘scientists’ who stated with
absolute authority that humans in an open car driving over
30 miles per hour would have their heads fly off.
A GREEN jobs program and they want to use OUR green to fund it.
So these morons haven't figured out Canada will produce whether or not we have the XL pipeline?
Sending the Canadian oil to China is part of Obama’s plan, but it will happen whether they build the Keystone pipeline or not. They already have a pipeline that sends the oil south to Vancouver, BC and Cherry Point, WA, and Anacortes, WA. The Anacortes destination is a Tesoro refinery that was over-hauled to refine the Canadian tar sands oil and is now concerned that their supply will be decreased due to the planned shipments to China.
The Cherry Point pipeline outlet is right near the dock that the Obama administration wants to send sub-bituminous coal to China. Now, with sub-bituminous coal selling for $12.35 / ton, it doesn’t make much sense to build this huge dock, unless there is a plan to also make it an oil shipment dock. China has already applied for the permit to double the capacity of the oil shipments to the southern leg of the trans-Canadian pipeline.
None of this means that they couldn’t still ship the oil to the Gulf Coast. Oh, and one more interesting point, the over-all global warming study is the demand that the opponents of the coal terminal are making. The addition of the tar sands oil to the study is in case they are planning to add the tar sands oil to the Cherry Point Coal terminal.
I wouldn’t mind having the oil, but I sure don’t want the filthy coal in my backyard.

I think O will approve the pipeline. He’s not up for re-election and he doesnt’ need the environmentalists any longer. Let’s be honest. He’s a black man. Do blacks have ANYTHING in common with the environuts? Do the unions and their need for union construction jobs need the enviros? The pipeline will help O’s economic bottom line and it’s about time that the rat coalition gets exposed for what it is: a LOOSE coalition of different interests.
I believe they are more then happy to see the oil go to the ChiComs.

Yup! That’s the problem with “studies” these days. The desired outcome is determined and they work backwards from there.
