Dem renews call for 'Department of Peace' after Conn. shooting By Pete Kasperowicz - 12/17/12 02:57 PM ET
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) on Monday afternoon resumed his call for a federal "Department of Peace," which he said is needed to counteract a "cultural matrix" in the United States that produces violence.
"On a global level, this type of thinking justified war and brings the slaughter of innocents. Nationally, it sows seeds for murder," he said on the House floor.
"Yet war abroad and violence at home are not inevitable. We have it within our power to recreate America today."
"Let us create an organized, structured approach to become architects of a new culture of peace in our homes and our schools and our workplaces," he added. "This is what the Department of Peace is about. Let us establish in America, where national security and peace at home includes jobs, housing, physical and mental healthcare, education, retirement security for all."
Kucinich, who is leaving the House at the end of the 112th Congress, has introduced legislation calling for the creation of a Department of Peace, a bill that has more than five dozen Democrats as co-sponsors.
Del. Gregorio Sablan (D), a delegate for the Northern Mariana Islands, also took to the floor Friday afternoon to offer condolences to the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and also to argue in favor of stricter gun-control laws in light of the shooting.
"But merely to offer condolences feels meaningless to me, unless we also act to save other children and families and communities from a repetition of this same terrible tragedy," he said. "We in Congress must take action to keep assault weapons and high-capacity clips out of the hands of those who are so dangerous, or deranged or deluded that they can snuff out the life of innocents on a whim."
Sablan acknowledged the Second Amendment right to bear arms, but said that amendment should not be seen as something that prevents action.
"If our talk does not take guns out of the hands of people who would murder children, then our condolences today are just empty words," he said.
How about a Department of Mental Health - for Kookcinich, alone. He’d keep at least of few hundred bureaucraps busy for a while.
They should name it the “Department of Domestic Tranquility,” or DDT. That’s a euphemistic name that would make the KGB/Cheka proud.
Patterned after the ‘religion of peace’ (Islam)?
How would a “department of peace” have helped the school shooting?
The department of energy is supposed to make us less reliant on foreign oil. We’re more dependent since it was created.
The department of education is (I guess) supposed to educate us better. Test scores are falling nation wide.
So with a department of peace, I can only guess that our world will get more violent....
This impish man is still in Congress? I thought he was redistricted out of seat in Congress.
Damn, that is so just 1984!
Nut’s good.
I was thinking retard, fool, maroon...
I thought he got beat by Marcy Kaptur which would make him the lamest of ducks.
...the midget must be shrinking, along with his brain...he might need another step installed on his personal step stool he uses at home...(wife is tall)
Could this be the actual implementation of the 2008 proposal of a Civilian National Security Force” which would be just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded as the US Military?
*thinks of Peacekeepers from “The Hunger Games”*
“If our talk does not take guns out of the hands of people who would murder children, then our condolences today are just empty words,” he said.
Empty words from empty people.
Let me guess...
The Department of Peace will have tens of thousands of new bureaucrats, using the model of the TSA. It will accomplish the broad goals set forth by the Øregime when he envisioned a civilian defence force as strong and well funded as the U.S. military...
is that about right?
That would be the perfect place to move the department of defense. War Is Peace.
We are witnessing a resurgence of all the feel-good stuff that characterized the 1920’s and 30’s, with a push towards socialism, League of Nations crap, and marxist folk music. Against this backdrop of passivity and weakness, the enemies of freedom armed themselves to the teeth, and shortly thereafter much of the civilized world lay in smoldering ruins with 100 million people give or take, dead.
