Spain accused of “act of war” off Gibraltar after two naval vessels enter waters around The Rock
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 15:27 EST, 13 December 2012 | Richard Hartley-Parkinson

Spain was accused of an “act of war” today after its naval ships repeatedly entered the territorial waters of Gibraltar.

Bob Stewart, Tory MP for Beckenham, said the British Government needed to “respond robustly to this aggravation” after Commons Leader Andrew Lansley said two Spanish naval vessels entered the waters of Gibraltar on Monday. He said they were given radio warnings before leaving, but Mr. Stewart, a former colonel, said the incursion was illegal and the Government needed to “do something about it”. …

Time for the Armada.

Is the problem that the powers that be just cannot seem to get a war started. What ever happened to the tried and true, just start shooting?

All of the crap seems to be foreplay for something much larger.

thatcher didn’t — because the Spanish in the 80s knew that they couldn’t face the Royal Navy of the 80s at that close range. Also, most Gibraltars, though they are of Spanish origin, prefer being part of the Crown (they aren’t part of the UK but are a Crown colony) because it gives them the same privileges as Guernsey say

The, now closed, comments section provide some interesting background to this article. A number of the comments are from residents of Gibraltar.

Respond with an unannounced, unaccredited torpedo. The incursions will stop.

“What ever happened to the tried and true, just start shooting?”

Spain was thinking about it during WWII (they were neutral, but Britain wouldn’t be able to defend it); they decided not to when they realized they couldn’t defend the Canary Islands from Britain.

That is how newly-independent India took back the Portuguese colony there (around Goa); when negotiations failed they simply stormed it.

Britain has no legitimate claim to Gibraltar or Northern Ireland; while they cling to that those they are losing their own island to Asian and Caribbean types. Good riddance.

Gibraltar being a very small piece of real estate, how can the territorial waters of Gib. and Spain not overlap?

How does the Royal Navy get to Gib. without crossing through Spanish territorial waters?

Sounds like a stalemate.

Precisely - and as the global economy continues to weaken, look for other European states to pull the same trick. We've entered a dangerous time.

We’ll remember that when you come looking for the usual UK military support when you go to war.

I dont why we bother senidng our men and women to die alongside you in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, when ‘people’ like you havent even the basic respect and gratitude for our help and our sacrifices.

“...‘people’ like you havent even the basic respect and gratitude for our help and our sacrifices.”

Americans are woefully ignorant about their own history let alone the history of places outside our borders. Sadly, for some Americans, when we don’t know something, we strut around like bloody peacocks all puffed up making silly pronouncements. We become unable to recognize our own arrogance. It’s all somewhat embarassing.

However, some of us do remember with fondness the historical and cultural ties we have to the mother country. We remember, that without a Scotland, we might never have had the enlightenment or our modern economics. The earliest universities were Scottish and English. The value that Scots place on education and hard work gave us the likes of Smith, Carnegie, Burns, and Bell. We remember that our great-grandfathers fought and died next to yours in the Great War and then again in World War II. Some of us do remember and are grateful.
