Rep. Tim Scott is playing up his credentials as a fiscal conservative as he prepares to take over the Senate seat being vacated by South Carolina Republican Jim DeMint.
In an interview Thursday night with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren following his appointment by Gov. Nikki Haley, Scott said he plans to focus his attention on spending restraints and reducing the role of government in people's lives when he assumes his new post on Jan. 2.
"Today we have a spending problem and we have not addressed that yet. I think that stands as an obstacle in the way of all Americans," said Scott, who will be the only black in the Senate and the first black Republican to represent the South in the Senate since Reconstruction.
"And so, to the extent that we can fight the good fight of faith, we will on the issue of economic development and dealing with the very, very slow pace of our economy," he added.
Scott's appointment to succeed DeMint, who is resigning his seat to take over as head of the conservative Heritage Foundation, came at the end of only his first term in office. But tea party conservatives welcomed Haley's decision, saying Scott would continue to represent conservative "core values" in the Senate just he had done during his short tenure in the House.
Haley, who was also interviewed by Van Susteren, sought to play down the fact that she chose an African-American man to take DeMint's place.

Would you rather have words that sound right that might be backed up later with actions or what Boehner is doing in both words and actions in raising taxes?
If you prefer the latter, then you are not a conservative.
Scott got an 88% score from the Heritage Foundation in his single term in the US House; and, unlike even Alan West, Scott refused to join the Congressional Black Caucus.
Our country has a spending problem like a junkie has a heroin problem. Unfortunately the fatal dose has already been injected.
........just fyi, I once listened to West explain himself on this specific subject of WHY? he joined the CBC. In his customary concise and articulate way he opined that he did because he felt he could do more to show them the error of their ways from the inside out rather than the outside in. I believed him then and still do. I think we have two of our most stalwart conservatives in West and Scott. Once, two or three months later I saw a u tube clip of him just lambasting them all in a meeting in his quiet, low key way. And, I like the way nobody gets in West’s face! When West talks, people listen!
In contrast, Scott got nothing from the civil rights movement and was scorned by the CBC when he was a candidate. He was not in a forgiving mood.
The metaphor is arresting but wrong on the facts. Assuming that we get the right kind of policies in place, the fundamental strengths of the US and of the American people will permit us to dig out of the financial trap we are heading for.
