(CNN) -- President Obama's poignant speech at Sunday's interfaith vigil in Newtown, Connecticut, set the tone for our mourning. Now, America's path forward will be decided out of the spotlight. The question of whether the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School will linger only in memory or be memorialized by an enduring shift in gun policy can only be answered by the legislature.
Incoming Judiciary Committee chair Sen. Diane Feinstein has announced she will introduce an enhanced assault weapons ban on the first day of the new Congress, but the fate of that legislation is in the hands of Vice President Joe Biden.

Like putting Barney Fife in charge of gun control.
where parts are as ubiquitous as a ball point pen...
it is crystal clear the only way to stop the violence is to train the population as a whole about the second amendment and self control and responsibility. (see individualism)
We have a Second Amendment to protect us against wannabe dictators like Obama. This justifies owning whatever arms are required to defend ourselves; do NOT give an inch on that point!
Surely you are not saying, “I have mine, or I’ll buy mine, before the ban so it doesn’t matter?”
What makes you think that the left will stop short of an outright ban on possession, without a grandfather clause if they win this battle?
No (I think you might have started reading in the middle of a long conversation thread). I started by pointing out the the ban on the private "transfer" on so called assault weapons would be unenforceable, because there are no registration records kept for them so there would be no way to prove the transfer took place before or after the ban (unless you were stupid enough to pay by check or give a dated receipt).
"Cherrio" pointed out that more ominous word in the bill was the ban on "possession". That is when I responded that that I interpreted possession to be the same as the 1994 bill, which would grandfather in existing gun owners.
I certainly wasn't endorsing the ban and will fight it tooth and nail if it looks like it will become law. And then do my best to violate it once it does...civil disobedience and all that stuff the liberal love, except when it's used against them.

Joe Biden’s Big F’n Ban.
Compliance for turn in worked so well with the Canadian long gun database./sarc
Lol! You can say that again, I didn't think they had it in them. I would like to think that we are made of sterner stuff and would make our government a bigger laughing stock than the Canadians did theirs. But after the last election, who knows?
Just back on line from doing just that.
:)
I see. That being said, enforceability wouldn’t be so difficult. If you ever had to use the firearm in anyway for self-defense, your possession of such a weapon would immediately become apparent.
For that matter, even if you were to take the firearm out and shoot it, you would be faced with a neighbor or some random person calling you in as a person with an evil banned gun.
Simply putting a ban in place would relegate these firearms to be hidden away, lest they be confiscated and/or subject the owner to criminal penalties. Contrary to internet bluster, (everyone is Rambo on the internet) the overwhelming majority of gun owners will not start a revolution or shoot government officials to prevent the enforcement of a ban.
Hence, a ban absolutely must be defeated, and it looks like people are already starting to cave on this due to the media hyperventilating.
The media has enormous power. Far more power than many conservatives will give it credit for. Look at what the media and the schools were able to do with homosexuality in such a short period of time.
Now they are on a full court press to go after gun rights. If we don’t not get out in front of this right now, we are only a step away from truly becoming like a socialist European state.
Precisely!
Oh joy! Will be just like the Summer of Recovery. This is going nowhere folks, Barry just offloaded it to his do-nothing VP.
