Favorite memory ...Nana’s sister got stuck at home, so we packed up Christmas dinner and drove 70 miles to take it to her and her family.

Sweet Words

December 21, 2012

Scott had always admired the relationship between Ken and Phyllis, his wife’s parents. So he asked them one day what made their marriage work. Ken replied, “You need to keep it sweet!”

A friend of mine concludes many of her notes to me and my husband and other friends with these words: “Remember to be good to each other.”

That’s great advice from both of them about being kind. The daily stresses of life can easily cause us to get irritable with our spouses or with others. We pick at the little annoyances or criticize minor habits. We blurt out harmful, unkind words without thinking.

The book of Proverbs gives us counsel about the words we use with others. It says, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles” (21:23). And there are these warnings: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (18:21); and “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (12:18 niv). Ken’s advice about “keeping it sweet” reminds me of Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”

Lord, fill our hearts with words that will be a blessing to others today.

Instead of hurling angry words
That wound and stir up strife,
Use words of kindness, filled with love,
That heal and nourish life. —Sper
Kind hearts are the gardens; kind thoughts are the roots; kind words are the flowers; kind deeds are the fruits.

Read: Proverbs 16:19-24

Put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering. —Colossians 3:12

Thank you for this evenings fun thread Beachbabe! *Hugs*

Ok...when I was about 5 or 6 yrs old I asked Santa for a camera. Well, come Christmas morning my older brother got a camera from Santa.

I was sooooo certain that Santa had inadvertently made an error that I pitched such a fit & plead my case until my poor brother had to relinquish his camera to me.

Silly Santa making such an mistake! As if!!! :)

Yep, we’re open till 6pm on Christmas eve. Luckily, I get off at 1:30pm so I can enjoy being with hubby and my MIL who is going to be visiting.

There are LOTS of guys! It’s good that a lot of the galz gave them specific instructions about what to get. LOL!

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...how’s the plumbing project?

All parts and pieces in place and doing their jobs?

The electrician won’t be here til next Thursday, which is good because I will be off for more errands. I just moved the toaster to another counter so my Dad can have toast.

What a great memory...”flexiblity”, a great attitude, and a really good memory maker. You did good!

My family has always been flexible, but I remember back in high school some friends with no flexibility at all. I don’t remember the “goal”, but 2 of my friends parents said NO to something that came up “because dinner was already made”....they missed out. My Mom just put dinner in the fridge.

I can't think of a specific gift that I would call a favorite, but my favorite memories of Christmas are very old - until I was 4 years old, I lived in my great-grandmother's house in Aldan, PA with her, my grandmother, several uncles and my parents.

My great grandmother was an imperious woman, but I was her fair-haired boy. Our house was a large brick house with twelve-foot ceilings. Our Christmas trees reached the ceiling, and sometimes traveled along the ceiling for a foot or two. The tree was always in the foyer, a beautiful wood-paneled room with a Tiffany lamp on the table. Every Christmas, it was girded about by presents.

But the focus wasn't on the presents - it was on the family, which had been through so much - the Depression and WWII. If you've ever read or heard "A Child's Christmas In Wales" by Dylan Thomas, you know what I'm talking about.

They were idyllic Christmases in the late 40's and early fifties. We moved away from Philly in 1951, but came back every Christmas for as long as my great-grandmother lived.
