Mayor Emanuel releases fiery statement on NRA

Mayor Emanuel has released a fiery statement denouncing the National Rifle Association for advocating armed police in about every school.

Rahm Emanuel prepared an unusually strong statement, even by his standards.

“It’s outrageous and unsettling that the NRA would choose to address gun violence not by taking assault weapons off our streets, but by adding more guns to our schools, " the mayor said in a statement.

The statement went on to say "that is not the right answer for our society, our schools and most importantly our children. People across this country, from small towns to big cities, are united and ready to pass common-sense gun control legislation.”

The mayor says the time has come for the NRA to get on board or get out of the way.

It’s worth noting that for many years, many Chicago high schools have had armed police and metal detectors.

Rahm is completely right, you know. Armed police in the schools are not the answer. I think we should put unarmed police officers in the schools, and take the guns away from all of the police. He's right - guns do more harm than good. Even the police, and especially Rahm's bodyguards, should be unarmed to prevent even more violence.

I have a better idea. As a FReeper project, we should get volunteers into all the schools. It could start in January, with Vets taking the lead. since we all have firearm training, and it could be quickly implemented. Imagine pressuring the school boards.

I think it would be easy to make most schools safe immediately. We have lots of moms and pops, grandmas and grandpas with guns! What could make the kids safer?

Whether they orchestrated this Reichstag, or it was just sheer coincidence, they have used it marvelously to rile up the public emotions into a high state of frenzy where citizens have been manipulated into irrational thought making "assault" weapons the demon. They are now going for the kill, driving the knife into the Second Amendment as far as they can, no matter that their actions are unconstitutional.

LaPierre’s approach today was in two stages, in case anyone missed it. He rightfully argued for immediate action. Naturally, this would be accomplished with existing trained local law enforcement. Second, he stated that the NRA Model Plan would include tax free professional training for school personnel and community leaders so they can take over the security demands in the future. This sounds like a rational plan to me.

Dear Mayor Emmanuel,

If the goal is to get as many guns as possible "off the street," I have to inform you that you're going about it all wrong. If you want to get the most guns off the street in "one shot" (no pun intended), what you need to do is disarm the police department of Chicago. After all, it will be difficult to find the people using the guns illegally, and once you do find them, my guess is that they'll object to turning them in. But if you go to every police officer and say "turn in your guns," you'll get the most bang for your buck (again, no pun intended). I'm sure you have a long list with every police officer's name and what sort of gun he carries, so by disarming the police, you'll get a tremendous number of guns "off the streets."

Of course, since your personal body-guards are probably armed, and you probably know them by name, you wouldn't even need to look them up to disarm them, and get them to turn in their guns first!
