NRA push for armed officers backed by state superintendent

The National Rifle Association’s call Friday for armed officers in every school drew quick support from Georgia School Superintendent John Barge, who said it would deter the type of mass killings carried out last week at a Connecticut elementary school.
But Barge said financially struggling school districts in Georgia would need help from the state to pay for armed officers.
“Having a school resource officer would certainly be ideal,” Matt Cardoza, director of communications at the Georgia Department of Education, said Friday after a conversation with Barge. “It makes the school a safer place, but the state would have to pick up a significant part of that cost. Districts aren’t really in a position to pay for more than what they’re already struggling to pay for.”
Speaking publicly for the first time since 20 children were killed at their elementary school in Connecticut, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for armed officers in every school in the U.S.
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” LaPierre said during a news conference in Washington.

There is nothing new here. Growing up in Brooklyn (There is only one real one.);o) in the 50’s, we had a beat cop at the school. Yes, an armed policeman patrolling the perimeter. It was a time when only one cop was needed for about 3500 HS students. At the end of the 60’s and into the 70’s they increased it to a squad car or two, especially on event nights. I don’t know how many are there today. The elementary schools had locked doors with the janitor holding the keys. I don’t ever recall any incidents occurring in any of the surrounding elementary schools in all the years I was there. Its a shame that we have become a society where a person must be armed to protect that which is valued by them. It has become a dangerous world since the 50’s, we can no longer leave our doors open or leave our keys in the car. I hear that the school I once attended now has a metal detector they have to pass through. Another local HS had to close because they were no longer able to educate the students? We can now visualize a black uniformed guard with a MP 5 at the doorway with a German Sheppard at our elementary schools. Welcome to the 3rd world America.
What the Libs/Lefties just cannot seem to understand is that, no matter how many ‘gun free’ zones and laws banning guns, if someone is bent on killing, they are going to find a way.
A would-be killer will ignore such ‘gun free’ zones and laws.
Until the Libs/Lefties understand that, they can pass all the laws they want and we will continue to see periodic shootings and killings.

I had a Grad Professor who told us where the key to his office was, in case we wanted to get into his office when he wasn’t there. “Locks only keep honest people out,” he said.
Similar could be said about ‘gun free’ zones and gun laws: only honest people [one’s not bent on killing] will adhere to them.
Again, it is all in the presentation.
Remember a few years back the NRA ‘sponsored’ “Eddie Eagle” gun training programs were offered to middle and high schools to teach the proper handling of guns to the students (and in some cases the teachers) and once the ‘powers that be’ found it was part of the NRA - IT WAS EVIL.
If some LIB would have made the same speech as Wayne LaPierre, it would be hailed as enlightening and the public would be up in arms to arm the schools.
Except the R’s, of course. The R’s would have said “What a stupid ill advised idea etc”
Sorry for a ‘blanket’ reference, BUT, led by R Limbaugh (joined by a good # here) and the usual suspects, teachers in general have been vilified as Union Thugs filling kids heads full of mush and pushing the Socialist and Communist ways of life onto the youngsters.
NOW these same people are screaming these “idiot” teachers should be given weapons - whether they want them or not.
There is very little dialogue to solve problems any more, everyone has an agenda and that is that.
During the Bush/Gore FL debacle, I had often stated that if the FL decision was reversed, and albore declared the Victor, the R’s and D’s would have swapped notes and gone about their business.
Notice the other day in the Boner vote, NARY a “D” voted FOR. You have to give the D’s ‘credit’ for that, they do stick together - unless it personally benefited ALL “R’s”, I would imagine we would have to go back quite a ways to see ALL the R’s sticking together in a vote.
You can count on at least 1 of the NE R’s going against the grain and possibly someone (R) vote the other way if they knew it was a lock for the D’s, just so they could claim they were non-partisan.
Yeah, when the citizens are endangered, what could the solution be but more guns for the government and less restrictions on where they can carry them? D’oh! OTOH, having guns in schools with no ill effect (and the occasional positive effect) might publicly pull the pants off this ridiculous “no guns in schools crap” so it might be good as an intermediate step.
Poor LaPierre, no sarcasm. Not only was his response late and inadequate, it was wrong on so many levels that it’s nearly impossible to track. Yes, there were a few good lines, but the solutions he offered might have come from just about any democrat: more & better mental health testing, installing an armed police officer at every school, parental involvement. Please. Worst of all, his very on-the-defense appearance as the man behind the NRA tended to reinforce the notion of NRA-complicity in the massacre. I don’t know—does the NRA make or enforce gun-laws? Ah, yes, they support candidates who support the Second Amendment. And they’re on the defensive? I’ve got to wonder who told LaPierre that it was HIS job to answer for Lanza and to offer solutions that would increase taxes, decrease freedoms, and empower public-sector unions.
Obviously what is needed is a Constitutional Amendment to erase the 2nd Amendment — it can be called the Prohibition of Firearms Amendment, and should work perfectly. And then, as in the musical “Camelot”, Obama can issue a proclamation that the weather will be perfect every day, and that will fix global warming.

What is your solution that will make sure the children are safe when they go back to school on Jan. 3rd?
I object to LaPierre’s big government solution, yes there is going to be a cost, but, a local solution will better solve the security threat. Some sort of sky marshal in the schools on a random basis, arm some teachers and issue teasers to all school employees.
Armed guards at schools is a good start. It’s not an adequate protection of our children though.That is added protection for them while they are on school grounds, but they have to come and go also. Children on school buses are sitting ducks too. It is time for armed citizen escorts.
Sorry Wayne, we don’t need another over-militarized bureaucracy spending our tax monies on feel/looks-good appearance. Allow the school staff to carry - with appropriate training and secrecy - and encourage the communities to assist as needed is the only - American - way to go. Our courts, airports, government office buildings, etc., are already taking on the appearance of locked down compounds - let’s not turn our schools into prisons.
