Did David Gregory just violate D.C. gun law by possessing a high-capacity gun clip?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 12/23/12 | William A. Jacobson

Legal Insurrection@LegInsurrection @davidgregory Was that a high capacity ammunition clip you were holding? Did you check D.C. law?

Update 5:15 p.m. — It has been 4 hours since I emailed the two communications people at NBC News with responsibility for Meet the Press, and almost two hours since I emailed the S.V.P. of Communications and left a voice mail on her cell phone, but no response yet from NBC News.

-snip-

It sure looks that way, unless the gun clip Gregory held up today was just a dummy prop.

I saw a number of tweets linking to this post David Gregory Violates DC Gun Law On National TV quoting D.C. Official Code 7-2506.01 (emphasis in original):

b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term “large capacity ammunition feeding device” means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term “large capacity ammunition feeding device” shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

Well, that's certainly a relief.

BTW, how's that gun free zone of DC workin' out?

Unlawful Possession of Ammunition (UA): It is illegal to possess ammunition in the District of Columbia unless the person is: (1) a licensed dealer, (2) a federal or city law enforcement officer acting within scope of duties, or (3) holder of a valid registration certificate of same gauge and caliber as ammunition in possession. It is also illegal to possess, sell or transfer any “large capacity ammunition feeding device.” A person guilty of this charge can be sentenced to a maximum fine of $1000 and/or up to a year imprisonment. D.C. Criminal Code 7-2506.01.

Why write to NBC? The inquiry should be to the DC police.

Well, if it was a high-capacity magazine, then yes, lock his bad self up.

But, since it was a high-capacity clip...nope, he’s ok.

"It is illegal to possess ammunition in the District of Columbia"

Laws only apply to non-communists. He is exempt.

Funny, I was asked recently what was in a box, in the trunk of my car.

“A couple of pieces of wood and some metal” I answered.

To start a report, the choices are:

Damage to Property
Destruction of Property
Lost Property
Lost Tags
Theft
Theft from Auto

Funny that they do not list firearm felony as a choice.

“It’s not a clip, It’s a magazine”

Thank You!! It’s like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I hear someone say this. An M-1 uses a clip. An M-14 uses a magazine. They look nothing alike, one is disposable & one is not, and yet even people who know the difference use the words interchangeably. Laziness maybe, I don’t know, but it sure makes them sound ignorant.
