Yes, Columbine Had Armed Guards—And They Saved Lives

School Safety: Critics of the National Rifle Association's call for armed security guards at our schools respond that one famous school did have a sheriff's deputy on scene. But without him, the toll would have been much worse.

After remaining silent on the mass shooting at Sandy Hook, the NRA's Wayne LaPierre held a press conference Friday to condemn another tragedy in a gun-free zone and to advocate the placement of armed security guards at our schools as is done at airports, banks and other public venues.

"It's now time for us to assume responsibility for our schools," he said. "The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be permanently involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection."

LaPierre called for a national school security plan, including an appropriation from Congress for armed guards in every school. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," he said.

As we have pointed out, the shooter at the theater in Aurora, Colo., had other theaters between his home and his ultimate target that he could have chosen. Yet, the one he picked was the one that publicly proclaimed itself gun-free.

We've also observed that in other school shooting incidents, such as at a high school in Pearl, Miss., the shooter's spree was cut short by the presence of an armed citizen able to shoot back.

Yes, the critics respond, and there was an armed security guard at Columbine High School in 1999. Yet, 12 students and a teacher were killed by two armed intruders, as if that disqualified the solution of placing armed guards, possibly unemployed army veterans, at each of our nation's 100,000-plus schools.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Maybe we homeschoolers ought to have armed guards at our schools as well. ;)

Kind of like that moron from Iraq that was saying some anti-American things, can’t remember what it was. I think it had something to do with using their oil against us in someway.

I know a guy that defected from Iraq and said they have political idiots the same way we do in their new gov’t.

I agree. The only sensible solution is to eliminate the gun free zones.

I am amazed at the number of panic stricken conservatives who apparently believe there’s a deranged gunman hiding in the bushes outside every school in America.

Some Detroit schools have armed security and they still have gang bangers killing each other in schools. Meanwhile the 30 school buildings in my county have never had a shooting EVER. (The half dozen schools in the city do have cops assigned to walk through a couple times per day)

The article makes some good points but I think we, the American citizen, are missing the bigger picture. Look how many liberties we are losing because of crazed people... Not counting terrorist attacks. It’s more than school shootings or putting armed guards in schools. Really we should never be in this situation.

We need to ask ourselves WHY...

Why are so many men going around shooting people? Not everyone of them has/had a “valid” mental condition...

only an attitude problem.

Why do they think they need to kill so many people cause they can’t handle bullying?

Why do they think they need to kill so many people cause they can’t handle getting fired?

Why do they think they need to kill so many people cause they can’t handle someone else getting the job they thought they should have?

Why do they think they need to kill so many people cause they can’t handle someone talking about them?

Why do they think they need to kill so many people cause they can’t handle their girl breaking up with them?

IMO, it’s more of an attitude problem than a certifiable mental condition. I got bullied, didn’t get what I thought was due me, lost boyfriends to other girls, or got treated like crap by ex-boyfriend(s), but did I go around shooting others because I had a problem? No. Nor have you. So the question is WHY did they?

Don’t know if I’m the first. We already have them.

The first to say so.

I’d hazard a guess that home schools are better armed than even most homes in the US. Certainly better armed that most schools.

Although rumor has it that in our little town, there is a gun in the school office safe and that one of the teachers has a gun hidden and locked up in his room.

Not to mention all the farm kids who hunt before school and throw their guns in their trunks and drive to school.

During a lockdown drill years ago, another student told my son that if there really was an armed intruder in the school, he’d crawl out the (first floor) window and go get his gun out of his car.

I have a funnier one:
I posted the 1927 Michigan school bombing to some liberal and he told me it wasn’t relevant because it was from 1927. He went on to tell me that if I had had used the OKC bombing as my example that would have been relevant because it was more recent.

What more can a school do to protect their students? (yes, sarc)

Ummmm. Like....Get lots of "likes" on Facebook?

(Yeah, me, too)

We don't need another bureaucracy.

We don't need more public employees when government should be shrinking instead of expanding.

The solution all along has been to allow those parents, grandparents, and staff the option to train/be trained and carry--not just on school grounds but everywhere.

Those who embrace the mission will likely perform it better than the reluctant.

We have seen how the spread of the concealed carry option has reduced crime overall in the US over the last two decades, where concealed carry options have opened up.

Those places with the most draconian firearm laws remain hotbeds of criminal activity.

The pattern is clear, and so is the correct course of action.

Oh but that doesn’t matter, children were still killed, and it was done at the hands of a right winger who would have been Tea Party had he still been alive and free today!

(Sick)
