CBS) Advocates of medical marijuana say pot has all sorts of health benefits. Maybe so, but a new study from Australia suggests that smoking pot can drive some people crazy - or at least make them go crazy sooner than they would have if they had never picked up the pipe.
The study, published online in "Archives of General Psychiatry," shows that potheads develop severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia about 2.7 years earlier than people who don't use marijuana.

The risk of mental illness from short term alcohol use or abuse is minimal, although some cases are known due to genetic susceptibility.
I’m not for banning the stuff, but it’s time for the weed advocates to quit their denial of dope’s adverse effects.
The snarky approach would be, you mean like prison overcrowding, and increased sales of snack food items.
I’d just like to see a change in the WOD, and the incarceration non violent folks. The movement is making progress of sorts, and we will have to see how WA CO and MT deal with the changes, which will then benefit other states seeking solutions. Never have and never intend to be a user.

I can tell you that here in WA the new law provides for a drug test on suspected impairment whilst driving or after an accident if bodily injury is involved. If you injure a person whilst stoned you are presumed at fault based on the drug test.
Pretty sobering thought for those who smoke and drive.
While I would like to see the prisons emptied of anybody arrested for smoking dope or possession, that was not my point. My point was simply that ever the rise of large usage of dope in the general population going back to the sixties, the dope advocates have been exceptionally vociferous in stating that it has no ill effects other than the tendency to consume large amounts of munchies. Many studies later have proven that assumption to be false. Heavy dope smoking, like any drug, can have harmful effects. That was all I was trying to say.

I wonder based on the culture just how many sobering thoughts those folks have who are into themselves over the well being of their friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.
Like those who continue DUI after DUI with no thought to “am I my brother’s keeper?”
When I quit smoking regularly, I was agitated for about four or five days. There is a mentally addictive quality involved.
But compared to the trauma involved quitting cigarettes...no comparison. A speed bump versus Mt. McKinley.
I agree with you. Some may tolerate it just fine. Others not so much. I also agree with the poster that postulated a correlation (i.e. not causation) with leftist beliefs - again maybe not 100% correlation but a tendency. One other point - I think it’s the case that the pot that’s smoked now is way more potent than that of back in the day. So for those adversely affected, perhaps the effect is more pronounced due to increased potency.
An ex-boyfriend of mine did a lot of pot and shrooms in his 20s and 30s, and sure enough, he flipped out. Started telling people about the visions he had, the spirits of shaamans and famous people who would come to him in his room at night, and everything that was “revealed” to him about Dec 21, 2012. He went offline that day and hasn’t been back since. I’m worried he jumped off a bridge or something. He’s overseas somewhere... travels so much I can’t keep track of him. All through India & the Middle East.

Two things about schizophrenia.
The typical age “window” for developing schizophrenia is from age 15 to about age 35 to as late as 45.
There is now a “smell test” to help diagnose schizophrenia before it shows symptoms.
“It has long been known that people with schizophrenia or psychosis are unable to correctly identify smells. For instance, they thought the smell from a pizza actually came from an orange or the smell of bubblegum was actually smoke.”
The utility of this test is that it can be done very cheaply by anyone, and may indicate that medical diagnosis and possibly treatment should be done immediately before the disease manifests itself.
So, whether pot makes you stupid, causes some people to go crazy or kills you is beside the point.
It's a freedom issue.

I’ve heard that kind of talk before and it seems a bit overly glib to me.
The bottom line on smoking pot, which has been around for millennia, as a culturally acceptable practice, is that pot makes you paranoid, lazy and pleasure seeking while alcohol makes you irritable, belligerent and “hold my beer” fearless. Apply these characteristics to a military empire building scenario and you understand why alcohol is OK and cannabis is not. It’s that freaking simple.
