Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the drop in murders and shootings stem from a wide range of strategies that include deploying more officers in crime-ridden areas and the controversial stop-and-frisk tactic. Were taking 8,000 weapons annually out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal guns, Kelly said. Guns are the leading cause of murders in the city this year, killing 237 people.
What, stop-and-frisk is saving lives? Shirley you cant be serious . . .
O Captain Obvious! My Captain Obvious! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weatherd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck Captain Obvious lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
(Apologies to Walt Whitman and his estate)

First, guns don't commit murder. Second, they make it look like this stupid and misleading statement is a quote from Kelly.

- Thank you Rudy Guliani for believing NYC could be made safe. Some were calling the city "ungovernable" before he came in. Let's all remember the crap Rudy took from civil libertarians and "activists" for addressing NYC's problems. 25 years ago NYC was a hell-hole where we would enter, conduct our business and get the hell out ASAP. Now, Now, Manhattan at least is one of the safest places.
- Most of the murders are gang and/or drug-related. When a truly innocent person is murdered it is news.
- In Manhattan, where my daughters live, the crime rate appears to be held down by a simply overwhelming police presence. You can't walk 50 yards in Times Square without passing multiple police officers. Anyone contemplating a crime in Manhattan would have to work around surveillance cameras that seem to be everywhere.

Amazing that this is news.

Too bad one can’t take a subway without fearing getting thrown onto the tracks.

An important factor in this is that in New York State when you are sentenced to prison you stay there. Very often felons do not get out even one day before their sentence is up. Moreover because of this many of these scumbags stay up state when they do get out. They don’t want any part of the cops in New York City. Of course this means more crime in the small towns up state around the prisons, but that is another problem.
