Reid's Rotten Rules [The End of the Senate Filibuster?]
National Review ^ | 1/1/13 | Hans A. von Spakovsky

As members of Congress fight with the president and each other over the budget impasse, another battle looms. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he may try — on the very first day of the new Congress — to change the Senate’s rules regarding the filibuster.

Reid wants to severely limit the minority’s ability to filibuster, and his plan for doing so would itself violate the Senate’s rules on rule changes. If successful, he would destroy a critical element of legislative procedure, one designed to prevent the “tyranny of the majority” that the Founders feared above all else.

The Senate’s long tradition of extended debate and an open amendment process is enshrined in Senate Rule 22. It comports with the Founders’ intent that the Senate be a more deliberative body than the inherently raucous House of Representatives. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison saw the Senate as the “great anchor” of the government that would calm the passions of the House. Similarly, George Washington told Jefferson that the Senate was intended to “cool” House legislation in the same way that a saucer was used to cool hot tea.

Reid and Obama are going to stuff the courts with commies and this how they are going to do it...

...the GOP should have done this when they had the majority but the “Gang of 14” consisting of Leftists and RINOs (including my state's Linda Grahamnesty) put the kibosh on it.

Ain't no gang gonna save us now—we are going to have benches everywhere full of treasonous constitution hating far Left evil bastard John Roberts.

Quite frankly, I am one of those that thinks there should be no Senate filibuster I don’t care who is in charge. Want Conservatism then vote for Conservatives.

I think the filibuster is awful.

This relieves Reid of filibusters while the Democrats control the Congress and should give Republicans that same advantage when Republicnas control the Senate.

Of course it will not give Republicans this same relief, because if they ever get control of the Senate they will give the filibuster back to the Democrats and Reid knows it.

He can read Republican Senators like a book. He knows what wussies they are.

The Government envisioned by the Founders ended with the Direct election of Senators. Repeal the 17th Amendment.

I'd probably agree. I would also support a serious third party effort. In my opinion, this country has only one political party. I would like to see a coalition government composed of three parties. If the GOP wants to vote like the Democrats, then let's see them do it openly -- those "two" parties can form a "coalition". Alternatively, the Constitution Party could act as a swing vote and join with whichever other party wants to limit government in some fashion, either fiscally or socially.

Currently, I am utterly disgusted with the politicians I see. I can think of damn few who care about this country -- almost all of them seem to care mostly about the perks of power more than anything else. It's all a rotten game.

Why is it impossible for “conservatives” to recognize the death of America?

Just when do you think you’re going to have a chance to once again vote for conservatives?

After these socialists have destroyed America?

Quit whining about what “should” have happened and start thinking about what is necessary to stop the destruction.

Do you really believe we’ll simply have a couple tough years, “learn our lesson”, and then elect your preferred candidates in, and they will then be able to undo the damage?

Absolutely correct! I well recall those days and our betrayal by the senate. Hey McCain, how is that comity working out for ya?

Good! Senate Republicans deserve this treatment after last nights fiasco. They were fed a line of BS that “negotiations” woould happen further down the road in order to get something(anything) passed. This will finally drive a stake through the hearts of the go along to get along idiots that the people have elected.

Should none of the Supremes retire or die while Obama rules, the next president will have nothing but lower court liberal fascists to choose from to replace any of them retiring or dying on his or her watch.

Communists have always thought in generations.

the GOP should have done this when they had the majority

It's funny, back then Harry Reid was all in favor of the fillibuster and critical of the GOP trying to put an end to it.........Now that he's got control of the senate, he wants an end to it........

“I would also support a serious third party effort. In my opinion, this country has only one political party.”

Seems I read this morning that the Senate voted 89-8 to accept Obama’s dictated “deal” re tax hikes.

Like you said above — only one political party, at least in the Senate.

Question:
How do you think the coming gun control legislation is going to fare in the Senate, considering the vote above ??

The effort st gun control will only cease when the fed body count goes above 1000. We’re looking at several years of legislative restrictions, confiscation attempts, and citizen violence directed at government flunkies. I see blood in the streets as quite inevitable.

Obama has effectively neutered the congress anyway. They are a helpless mass of severely dysfunctional beings with no real purpose in this Marxists dictators realm. Reid, even thought he doesn’t know it yet is just one of them.

Well, c’mon, people! It’s too hard to install and run a dictatorship if those who oppose you can do silly thing like stop you with a filibuster. Gotta’ get rid of the rules that can be used against you!!!
