The Cuomo administration is preparing to shove thousands of mentally ill New Yorkers out of supervised settings — where they can be forced to take their medication — into far less restrictive, far more dangerous “community housing.”

Albany, under pressure from the Obama administration, recently ordered psychiatric facilities not to place any discharged patients in adult homes, where staff can ensure they take their meds.

Instead, they’ll be placed in “community housing,” without full-time supervision.

This is part of the state’s plan to essentially empty adult homes into community-based “supportive” apartments, leaving up to 6,000 people — including those with schizophrenia — to live on their own, with minimal supervision.

Titicut Follies! I’ve been trying to think of the name of that movie for ages. Made by the great documentarian Frederick Wiseman who also made High School and the beautiful movie Blind.

You're right - the ideas came to fruition 60’s - and were probably written about before that... but the movement came into it's own in the 70’s. One Flew over the Cockoos Nest was to deinstitutionalization what Rachel Carson's ‘Silent Spring’ was to the ecology movement. More than correlation - less than causation.

Rudy was the greatest. He turned NYC from a sewer into a place that was habitable. People on the right who live elsewhere didn’t get how smart and strong he was. They wanted someone who was exactly like them to be president - their provincialism and intransigence led to the garbage we have now. In the long run, they were not a lot different from the idiot blacks who voted for 0 because they thought he looked like them.

And the antinuke movement really took off after “China Syndrome”.
Hollyweird and the Enemedia are really the 4th and 5th branches
of government.

It was called the anti-psychiatry movement and it was spearheaded by shrink R.D. Laing. Hope the crazies roost on Bloomberg’s townhouse.

Roosting on Bloomberg's townhouse? Gonna get hot up there - no big gulps for them...

“Worked in California.

Write a gun ban bill.

Release a mental patient.

Allow the patient to buy a gun and pass the waiting period.

Patient shoots up the school yard in Stockton, then kills himself.

Ban bill immediately pulled out and passed in a heat of passion.

California gun owners loose their rights.”

Cuomo, Obama, to release more mental patients)...

Does this include patients with blood clots on the brain? Specifically, diplomatic blood clots?

I agree; however, it was up to Rudy to tell us the federal gov has NO business involving itself in social matters.

I do think he would take this fiscal/criminal mess and fix it, just like he did w/ NYC. Zucotti Park WOULD NOT have happened under his jurisdiction.

But just like many of our “pubes”, they feel the need to reach across the aisles.

The only time they should be reaching across the isles is to slap the others upside the head.

I’ll amend that to read “hope the crazies roost on Bloomberg’s front steps.”

We all need to remember the harm elites in Hollywood have done to our culture next time we consider buying movie tickets.

Ewwww. Only time I was in NYC after Rudy was to catch the Amtrak to DC for our Tea Party, as well as the Israel Day Parade, 1st NYC Tea Party (4/15/09) and a few protests against regarding 9/11.

We were there when Imanutjob from Iran was supposed to visit this sacred ground. NO WAY in heck were we going to allow it to happen.

It’s “visit” there was cancelled. We were moved a few times by the NYPD for blocking the entrance. Can’t blame them, they were doing their job. They understood why we were there and were very kind. They didn’t want that thing there either.

Yes, we blocked an entrance to a very highly sensitive area, which was unlawful; however, they did not arrest us.

We moved away foot by foot, they would boot us. We finally landed on the corner of the entrance. No way this emmer effer was going to enter.

The corner proved to be more effective. More people walking along the sidewalk stopping and listening, preaching and praying.

We may have not have been an army of thousands, but an army of few, who stopped that bastard from stepping foot on ground zero.

The culture that we are stuck with now has mostly been one bad investment after another, tracts of smelly swampland where nothing can grow pawned off by sleazy weasels wearing too much polyester and more gold chains than the pharaohs, who haven’t even had to work very hard to pull off their malignant scam. Good has been traded for bad and then for worse.

The values economy is tanking and the economic indicators are just one sign of how awry things have gone. The social indicators are another.

Culture is how we teach ourselves to perpetuate our society. Instead our cultural investments have given us broken families who are willing to sell their rights to the government in exchange for being taken care of from cradle to grave. And the government is willing to make the deal so long as it can bring in more foreign laborers to balance out the gap in the birth rate and then increase the police forces and the military to deal with the fallout from that immigration leading to a police state.

As cultural investments go, it’s not hard to see that this is a bad one.

Our society is less literate than it used to be, it’s less sane than it used to be and less productive.

I beg to differ - even a cursory reading of Laing, et al will show that their alternative approach to mental illness had nothing whatsoever to do with putting people on medication as a treatment, remedy, cure or policy. Quite the opposite - their approach had to do with a redefinition of what constitutes mental illness. I am not endorsing their views, but the last thing their school of thought called for was labeling people as “crazy”, drugging them, and then giving them no theraputic treatment.

I never said that Laing called people crazy or was for drugging them. Quite the opposite: he was one of those theorists who pondered ‘who was crazy and who was sane?’ That eventually lead to the idea that there was no way to evaluate mental illness, which lead (other factors were involved, of course) to deinstitution.

Just went to your ‘home page’ and was delighted to see your viewpoint and photos. Are you a fan of Pam Geller? I go to all her events here in NYC.

I am a fan of hers. Have her on my FB. Although, I do not go to the city.

I’ve been tempted a few times; however, it usually falls on a “school night”....work the next morning.

You know, I would LOVE to have another FReeper friend here in NY.

Could you FReepmail me the next time you will be at one of her events? The more notice, the better, that way I can take off, if I have to.

I love meeting fellow FReepers.
