St. Paul City Council calls for statewide ban on semi-automatics

The city of St. Paul doesn’t have direct say over statewide gun laws, but that isn’t stopping city council members from calling for more gun control. At the Wednesday, Jan. 2 council meeting, they amended their annual request to lawmakers to include a crackdown on semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines.

They join a chorus of municipal bodies, politicians and Hollywood celebrities clamoring for tighter gun laws in the wake of the horrific school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Here’s a look at six proposals being mulled across the country.

Some gun enthusiasts are dubious that a ban on semi-automatics would have prevented the Newtown tragedy and other tragic gun deaths. At the Newtown site, police recovered two handguns, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, in addition to the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle that Adam Lanza used to kill 20 children and six adults.

"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia', the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms', our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason, I believe the Second Amendment will always be important." -Senator John F. Kennedy, rightwing extremist, April 1960

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, and one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible." -Hubert H. Humphrey, bitter clinger,Guns magazine, February 1960, p.6

Those hypocrites who say they want to “reduce gun violence” and therefore want to ban certain types of guns in furtherance of that goal, actually want to send armed men (i.e. with guns) to arrest - or kill - people who have never hurt other people but who wish to retain the ability to defend their families. That isn’t reducing gun violence, it’s committing it.

Don’t they realize that by attempting to infringe upon our protected rights these people immediately become the government tyranny they scoff at?

Way to go St. Paul with your touchy-feely laws. Did you notice that every murderer who used a gun ignored many laws as they will any future gun laws?

Wow, what a great idea! Let’s just ban guns! Hey, and while we are at it why not ban heroin and booze too?

Holy cow!
Even Hubert H. Humphrey “got it”?

I can now say that the present GOP is to the left of a 1960 Democrat.

A meeting of the St. Paul City Council.......

“Those damn kids keep running across my front yard. I move that we outlaw kids!”

“And people writing checks in the grocery store! I move that we outlaw that!”

“I hate my neighbor, Bob! I move that we outlaw my neighbor Bob!”

“I hate clouds! I move that we outlaw clouds!”

“Australia! We must outlaw Australia!”

“Yes! And leaf mold! All leaf mold must be forbidden!”

I left a comment...

I fully expect Dayton et al to try and do something stupid.

If they do, I intend to make them bleed for it.

How about figuring out how to plow the streets?

they have no jurisdiction here: Minnesota Statutes § 471.633 expressly preempts all local governments from enacting legislation regulating firearms, ammunition, or their respective components.
