EDITORIAL: EPA’s chilling effect

Alaskan liberty goes up in smoke under new air regulations

Not-so-unintended consequences of overregulation are in the air. Newly adopted rules limiting airborne soot imposed by bureaucrats in Washington threaten to freeze the choices — and toes — of individuals living more than 4,000 miles away in subarctic Alaska. Thanks to authoritarian overreach, the freedom of America’s “last frontier” may not last much longer.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waited until after President Obama’s re-election to announce drastic new restrictions on soot produced by industry smokestacks, diesel trucks and even ordinary sources like wood-burning stoves. The new standard for the great outdoors reduces the legal limit for airborne fine-particle matter from 15 micrograms per cubic meter of air to 12 micrograms. To put in context how overly restrictive that is, secondhand tobacco smoke in a closed car can expose a person to 3,000-4,000 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, according to the agency.

The worst aspect of the agency’s one-size-fits-all scheme is that the same rules that purports to clean up the air above U.S. megalopolises apply to the 97,000 residents of Fairbanks and its surrounding county, tucked amidst the wilderness of central Alaska. In January, the average low temperature is 15-25 degrees below zero and many homes turn to wood stoves to keep their heating costs under control. The county had already been on the EPA’s “non-attainment area” list before the new regulations. Compliance will be even harder now.

The entire EPA agency should be required to spend the winter in a light tent near Fairbanks before writing rules for such areas.

Socialism is the belief that somebody somewhere is smarter than everybody everywhere.

The purpose of environmental laws is to make living so expensive for the peasants that we can't afford to continue doing so.

I am not being facetious.

Elections have consequences, and the last one unleashed the EPA.

I agree. Let the bureaucratic a-holes trudge up there and try to enforce those rules .... especially during hunting season when the bullets will fly with the slightest movement ... black SUVs have been often mistaken for a moose at night.

Spend the winter near Fairbanks ~ first strip them to their legislative authority.

I think we're getting somewhere with what needs to be done.

Naw ... just make them go in person to enforce their rules.

I trust Alaskans (like Texans) would do the right thing.

Meanwhile in China:

The EPA is why all American Manufacturing is moving overseas. The EPA is the ultimate share the wealth scheme. It costs more to fufill the EPA anti-polution paperwork requirements than it does to produce the items overseas.

The only reason Chinese light bulbs are cheaper to buy in the US than American ones is because the EPA causes the American ones to be so expensive the Chinese can produce the identical object and ship it around the world cheaper than we can just produce the item.

The New World Order is created out of unequal enforcement of laws, just like our welfare and crime problems are.

Justice is not a New World Order talking point. Injustice is the Agenda.

The air in the streets in China would not be legal coming out of the smoke stacks of America.

What’s it gonna take for people to just start saying “F’ you! I’m not complying.” to these goons from DC?

You’re right, to force everyone except those needed in government approved farming, mining, forestry, etc. to live in large cities without surburbs in high rise apartments. No need for private transportation and all dependent on government. No private property rights and several forms of population control. This has been a goal for “progressives” for many decades.

I remember that under Carter, his NHTSA head Joan Claybrook wanted to impose a regulation that required autos traveling over 65 to have their lights start flashing and horns honking.
She was the author, IIRC, of the dreaded seat belt interlock, so if a seat had weight on it, the belt must be buckled before the engine would start. Great for women trying to escape a rapist.
