nfluential conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer has praised Republican House Speaker John Boehner for preventing a rape of the Treasury by blocking a larger relief bill for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Bohener and the GOP leadership have been criticized by New York-area Republicans for failing to pass a $60 billion bill to the floor, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie calling it disgusting.
Instead, the House passed a much smaller bill dealing solely with flood insurance on Friday, with a larger bill set to follow.
Speaking on Fox News Special Report on Friday, Krauthammer claimed that Boehner had done the right thing. I think what Boehner did in postponing the vote until today was absolutely right, he said.
That was a rape of the Treasury. $60 billion, including a ton of pork. The part that was essential that passed today was to replenish the flood insurance. That's right, and the rest ought to be debated in regular order.

well, if true, good
Sent you a Freepmail update on Ables case.
Republicans need to get their heads on straight, regroup, and start to announce what is right - stridently.
Duh, of course it made sense to review this bill for a few days rather than throw money down the stairs and see where it lands.
Christie is a bastard like Obama, a self centered political survivor, and in the end he skips the part that is best for people. And everyone agreed with his irresponsible populist rant.
Echo...If true, for once.
Maybe I am missing something but why not have the House bring up their own version of the bill minus the pork. The bill would be in a pure form when it went to the Senate. The Senate would then be forced to hold it up while they pile on the pork.
P.S. FEMA is already funded....and really didn't need more money ecept it's been raped before.
P.S. FEMA is already funded....and really didn't need more money except it's been raped before.
They can't - because they love these types of pork-laden bills, too, and want to preserve the option to offer up their own in the future without being accused of hypocrisy.
Republicans made a strategic decision a long time ago that taking short-term heat from the base about overspending posed a lower liability to their political careers that the longer-term risk of losing the ability to direct their own pork to their own districts, as needed.
Don’t think that GOP members of Congress didn’t add their own pork. In the last budget deal Sen. John Thune (R-SD) slipped in money for the ethanol boondoggle and was taken to task for it by Laura Ingraham on her radio show.
Exactly —
Apparently all the rest of the 60 billion is just pork — all of it.
The $9.7 billion replenished the flood insurance fund. The rest can be dismissed as irrelevant — period.
Spend the 9.7 billion and then send us another request.
I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.
- James Madison
Is it any surprise Christie loves pork?
He never misses a meal and screams when it’s not served on time.
I am unable to find anything in the US Constitution that says the federal government has a power to be an insurance company, whether it be flood insurance or unemployment insurance. These are things that the private sector can provide in a much more effective and efficient manner. Additionally, there is nothing in the constitution that gives the federal government to be a charity. Private charities are much better than any government programs.
It is not that conservatives don't believe in helping people in need. They do. Conservatives give far more to charities than liberals. Conservatives want to save the Republic so there is a Republic for America's children. Voting for bills like Sandy Relief is a vote to hurt our children's. People like Krauthammer, all Democrats and RINO hate children and want to see your children suffer. How vile and evil is that?
Okay, I probably don't know how to play the "children card", but is better than anything I have heard from any Republican.
If would have been more effective if Kraut listed the pork so that all would see what is in the bill. ‘Ton of pork’ is just an unsubstantiated assertion which needs to be backed up to expose the pork packers.
Agree, I wonder if these jackasses ever considered dealing straight with the public instead of their hide and seek games?
My impression is that the underwriting has been pretty poor. Not only regarding the assessment of risk of a catastrophe like Sandy -- but even as far as the individual property risk underwriting. My late FIL's house was pretty close to the ocean. We live 3 miles inland, and on a hill. But both houses are in the same Federal flood insurance rating zone. (I plan to drop the flood insurance when it comes up for renewal. We had some tree damage, but no flood damage from Sandy. But it's close to a sure thing that flood insurance premiums will be going ballistic. And if the water level ever comes up this high, the entire insurance industry will be bankrupt.)
Krauthammer has NEVER been a conservative. I find him more and more to be a self-serving ‘smart guy’. There is little to his commentary and lots and lots of nonsense
Thanks Uncle Chip.
