BOULDER — Several hundred people turned out for a vigil in Boulder for an elk killed by a police officer.

Those honoring the dead elk on Sunday lit candles, sang and told stories.

The elk was fatally shot by a Boulder police officer, who has been placed on leave. An off-duty officer suspected of assisting in loading the animal’s body into a pickup truck is also on leave.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, organizers wanted to give people an opportunity to grieve, celebrate and find closure.

Reminds me of the moose that was killed in Natick, MA some years ago. The moose had wandered into a residential neighborhood and was casually munching on some shrubbery. A crowd gathered to ooh and aah. Photos were taken and children gathered. The police arrived and shot the moose with what most in the crowd thought was a tranquilizer gun.

There was a smattering of applause as the moose sunk clumsily to its knees. Tranqulized - the crowd thought...

But the moose had been SHOT DEAD. The cops thought that the moose presented a hazard in such a crowded environment.

Citizens of Natick were outraged. The story made national and world news. The talk-shows were alive as people weighed in on the horror that had taken place in suburbia.

But the best was yet to come. It came out that the dead moose carcass had been un-ceremoniously tossed in the town dump. The grieving began anew...

The take-home message is that if you want to round up Obama voters, just kill an elk.

We have a winner!

"...organizers wanted to give people an opportunity to grieve, celebrate and find closure."

Several. Hundred. Attended. It's a fornicating ungulate. You want closure? When life gives you a dead elk, make burgers.

All elk aside, for some time now I’ve been wondering what exactly is the purpose of all these candlelight vigils.

Makes people feel good, I guess.....

That poor animal, and all you people can do is joke about it. This is series, and the level of my disappointment in you is hugh.

Can we get addresses of all the “mourners”?

I for one would want to know how many of these nimrods resided near me.

I am a long time member of the B.P.O.E. and I don’t appreciate it when people make jokes when one of us gets snuffed by the coppers.

Typical for the post-Christian Druids of Boulder. If they can find volunteers, they’ll be doing human sacrifices next.

It does make you question what they hold deer.

Maybe they were just looking for an excuse to protest against the policeman and his elk.

I think there should be a rule that all elk threads have pictures of Elkie.

“Yes, brothers and sisters, Ed the Elk was a beloved member of our community. But, he had overcome many problems in his life. You see, Ed was an elkaholic. You could find him down at the bars most every night.”

The shooting was a spontaneous response to an offensive You Tube video posted by the elk.

Not much of news story, lacks detail. It sounds to me like the elk was poached.

“When they get done grieving over that elk they can come to my place and grieve over the squirrel that got run over this morning. I am overwhelmed with grief and could sure use some emotional support right now. hahahahahaha”

Really! So you equate an accident where someone runs over a squirrel with the wanton shooting of an elk? This isn’t about animals big or small dying, it’s about out of control cops. But I guess that’s beyond your sphere of comprehension this morning!

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: “ (Romans 1:21-24)
