A full size 1911 in .45 is not at all hard to carry all day for the average size person in the right holster.

As in Goldilocks and the Three Bears: The 22 is a bit large; the 27 is a bit small; the 23 is just right!

There are no poor shooting Marines—why is that?

Because a poor shot never gets to join the Corps.

Is not being good enough to be a Marine just an excuse or can just anybody be a Marine?

I agree with your post. There is no one shot sure stop with a hand gun (short of getting to the CNS.) I recall an incident reported in NYC in the 70s when the police and feds fired and hit a subject over 40 times in an elevator with rounds from 380 to 45 cal and the guy still managed to get his hands around the neck of a Narc and almost choked him to death. He bled out eventually.

That said, I personally prefer the sandw 40 and use a Bersa ultra compact as I like the external safety feature. When I was on the job, carried a Glock 19 then a Glock 22 over my last 10 years there. Having used a wheel gun (sandw 19)before that, never became comfortable with the trigger safety...a personal preference matter for sure.

.22 and .380 kill more people in the US than any other caliber. May not stop a crazed crackhead/starving OBot with a center mass hit but controllable enough for head shots. Small enough to be wear anywhere.

Here’s a no BS article from a no BS sort of guy who has actually used a gun to defend his life and end others:

Oh, and putting my money and my life where my mouth is I daily carry a .40 caliber Glock G23 with Gold Dot 165 JHPs in it.

I would suggest a 20 gauge shotgun for you and your daughter for home defense.

Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 would work fine. Under $400

I love .45 but I live in South Texas where it is hot and humid. Uniform of the day is shorts, T-shirts and flip flops 9 mos out of the year.

I do admit to wearing jeans, socks and shoes several days out of the year, however.

I feel most comfortable with front pocket, cargo pocket or rear pocket carry.

Nothing over 16 oz. or it really feels like my shorts are about to hit the floor before I give the command.

"a handgun that can stop an intruder and be fired by my 15 year old daughter without loss of control"

You'll need to test various handguns, but it's hard to beat a good 38sp/357mag revolver.

Also check out the FN Five Seven if you don't mind dropping a grand or so. It's used by the secret service.

stop an intruder and be fired by my 15 year old daughter without loss of control. Any suggestions?

regarding your point, the only thing that helps with that is grip and practice. When adrenaline is pumping, rote response rules the day. As to what gun, that is personal to the person who will be using it. I’ve seen men and women who can fire high caliber firearms well, and some poorly. My wife falls in the latter category so we have a 20 gauge double for her in case an intruder gets inside...she is confident with that, more so than with any hand gun.

Austin is similar (but granted not as bad...)
Being prone to melanoma I've gotten used to light, high-SPF, high-tech (moisture-wicking) pants, a tee with an open long sleeve shirt made of the same stuff as the pants - which conveniently serves as a cover garment.

(shrug) Works for me.

I have a 23, and a 27. The 23 stays home, the 27 travels a lot.

".22 and .380 kill more people in the US than any other caliber"

Reagan was very nearly killed by a ricochet from a cheap .22 cal snub nosed revolver.

The 9mm is a great round

I used to believe that was true.

However, several reports over several years of suspects carted off to the hospital after 3,5,7, or 9 hits from a 9mm changed my opinion. If someone is threatening me I don't want a round that sends them to the hospital, I want a round that sends them to the morgue.

Different bullet style in that caliber. Round nose, hollow point, soft point, semi wad cutter etc.

Some will only feed reliably with round nose, not the best choice for defense.

As for home defense, look at an all stainless steel .357mag double action revolver with 4” barrel.

You can shoot .38 special or .357mag. any style bullet will work. Mix or match makes no difference. Still works.

If one round fails to fire for some reason just pull the trigger again for the next round. No having to learn how to clear a jam. Load, aim, shoot, eject. Repeat.
