South Carolina teacher on leave for stomping on American flag in front of class

A high school teacher in South Carolina is under investigation and has been placed on long-term administrative leave after he allegedly threw an American flag on the floor and stomped on it in front of his students.

Scott Compton, an English teacher at Chapin High School in Chapin, S.C., reprised the unpatriotic deed in three classes over the course of one day, reports local NBC affiliate WIS.

One parent, Michael Copeland, said he heard his teenage daughter discussing the incident and asked her to tell him the whole story.

“He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was a cross, and he said, ‘What does this represent,’ and everybody said, ‘Christianity,’” Copeland explained to WIS.

“Then he proceeds to take down the American flag, and said, ‘This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything,’ and then he throws it down on the floor and then stomps on it, repeatedly,” Copeland continued.

“I asked what was he trying to get, the point across? And she said, ‘I don’t know,’ and he said, his explanation was there would be no consequences, it’s just a piece of cloth that doesn’t mean anything.”

Perhaps ironically, however, Compton would soon face consequences.

Mark Bounds, a spokesperson for the school district, told WIS that the district frequently cautions teachers to avoid introducing personal opinions in the classroom.

“Our superintendent served in the military, I served in the military for 20 years, our flag is a symbol of our freedom, and so many people have fought and died for that liberty, and so we take this action very seriously,” Bounds added.

According to FITSNews, a South Carolina-based conservative news and entertain website, people in the Chapin High community describe Compton a “good teacher” who is “very liberal” and “wears it on his sleeve in the classroom.”

A substitute teacher will fill in for Compton for the remainder of the school year, according to WIS.

Any anyone qualified (by residence) can run for a SC School District board. Even homeschool parents. Just because it isn’t done yet doesn’t mean it couldn’t be done.

In all fairness to balanced presentation, they ought to have some Marine veterans from WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan come in and talk a bit about what the flag represents.

I thought you were going to say "...come in and stomp on the teacher". But talking to the students might work too!

This idiot is dying to sue for “free speech”. Of course, if the students had stomped all over a poster of obama’s face, they would probably be arrestede for terror threats against the LIAR in chief.

Well, instead of a poster of Obama, how about a copy of the Koran (with a bacon bookmark inside)?

‘This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything,’

Poor guy doesn't have a clue what a symbol is.

The flag IS a piece of cloth, but it is not ONLY a piece of cloth because of what it means to many people. That's what a symbol is, something that represents something else.

At this point, parents need to face the unhappy truth that if they fail to pull their children out of hell, they are abandoning their souls.

On a soul level parents will not get away scott free on this account. God did not bless people with precious babies so they could be raised by devils.

The choice is now very stark.

Homeschool parents should organize to quietly take over the school boards. It’s fantasic that they are rescuing the minds and souls of their own children as is their duty as a parent of God’s child. It would be double great if they could rescue the kids abandoned to the demons by their stupid, low information parents. They should go for vouchers.

My sentiments exactly. But why "quietly"? Is that a reference to the old Silent Majority?

I can understand some Stalinist puke indoctocrat losing his $hit in a history/social studies class, but what in the hell does this have to do with an ENGLISH class ?

My psychology teacher in high school was pro-sandinista and showed us a pro-sandinista film in high school.

My social studies teacher in the 7th grade (1986) brought in some pro-Sandinista nutter, too (I believe he was a “journalist”). I was not impressed.

Two undeniable facts about this that demonstrate the idiot was pushing his own agenda rather than simply trying to make a point about symbolism:

The act of desecrating the US Flag (burning, defacing, stepping on, etc.) is a specific and overt political statement. NO ONE, especially a ‘college educated’ American, that knows the issues surrounding flag desecration doesn’t understand this.

If the idiot is simply trying teach students this concept, why physically take the actual flag and walk on it? There is an infinite number of images out there showing people doing what the teacher claims to be describing. Stomping of the flag was him expressing his personal beliefs.
