Libyan Gun Control Policies Left Guards Unarmed at U.S. Compound in Benghazi

(CNSNews.com) - The gun control policies of the post-Gaddafi government in Libya delayed the arming of bodyguards for U.S. diplomats in that country and left the local guard force hired to watch over the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi unarmed, according to internal State Department memos and written testimony by the State Department officer who was in charge of the department’s security in Libya until six weeks before the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks.

“Our long term security plan in Libya was to recruit and deploy an armed, locally hired Libyan bodyguard unit,” State Department Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstrom told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in written testimony.

“However, because of Libyan political sensitivities, armed private security companies were not allowed to operate in Libya,” Nordstrom said in his testimony submitted on Oct. 10. “Therefore, our existing, uniformed static local guard force, both in Tripoli and Benghazi were unarmed, similar to our static local guard forces at many posts around the world. Their job was to observe, report, and alert armed host nation security, and armed DS agents on-site.”

You mean to tell me that the Obama anti-gun campaign reached all the way into Libyan politics?

Didn’t realize that the demokrats were that powerful.

This makes me sick to my stomach watching them blame another country for their own incompetence. Twenty to thirty personnel were supposed to be abandoned there.

This handling of Benghazi, with American deaths, sickens me.

Literally, I feel nauseated thinking that Libya's sensitivities were primary reason there were no armed guards at all at the US mission/consulate. It was American soil.

The Americans were on American soil. The crowd was on American soil.

That there was an attack on American soil is terrorism and US flackies, you know the ones, did not beef up security with personnel and weaponry, or give the American personnel the okay to do like the British did - shag ass from a very percolating situation. should have just told Libya to FU, that the US takes care of its people.

And, didn't the Libyan guards point out to the crowd where the ambassador was located? That to curry favor and perhaps being torn apart by the crowd which might have seen the guards as sympathizers to America.

Thanks Nachum. That policy wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the anti-Islamic video. /s

Did anyone read in the content of the article anything about assigning U.S. Marines to guard our personnel in Libya until something could be worked out to protect our people?

This article is pointing out another excuse by the Leftist failure’s in office currently. It is a discussion of another ruse they are putting out to attempt to divert the blame from their own incompetence.

I know BS when I read about it, or read it, and this is about the Dept. of State BS’ing once again.

Kill me, F--k me, humiliate me, desecrate my body, lie about the reason I am dead, do anything and everything except tell the truth. More information from the Ministry of Truth, also known as the Obama Administration and State Department, to follow soon.

George Orwell was and is a man that did see the future. He was not optimistic about the future. I hope he is wrong but I fear he is right. Big Brother is watching.
