MILLER: White House goes after guns
The Washington Times ^ | 8 January, 2013 | Emily Miller

Posted on 01/09/2013 5:26:20 PM PST by marktwain

The White House just realized it had to at least pretend to listen to America’s 100 million gun owners. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. invited a representative from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to attend a White House meeting with anti-gun groups scheduled to take place Thursday.

Up to now, gun owners have been left out of President Obama's task force seeking “solutions” to gun violence by the end of the month. The simultaneous high-profile media blitz is meant to ready the public for radical limits on the Second Amendment.

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appears to be calling the shots. The billionaire is exploiting the second anniversary of the shooting of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords with a new TV advertisement running in 20 markets where there have been mass shootings, including Tucson, Ariz.; Roanoke, Va.; Denver; and Milwaukee, along with Washington, D.C.

It features the mother of a 9-year-old girl killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School saying, “I have one question for our political leaders. When will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby?” Hizzoner’s “Demand a Plan” initiative intends to impose government background checks on private sales, ban guns that have certain cosmetic features and outlaw “high-capacity” magazines.

Ms. Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, announced Tuesday they have started “Americans for Responsible Solutions” to raise money to fight gun-rights groups. “We saw from the NRA leadership’s defiant and unsympathetic response to the Newtown, Conn., massacre that winning even the most common-sense reforms will require a fight,” the couple wrote in a USA Today op-ed.

They were not specific regarding what laws they will be pushing, but they hinted at a shared agenda with Mr. Bloomberg by suggesting the need to do something about “weapons designed for the battlefield”

They can take away the guns, but they sure as hell won’t want to go up against what will replace them. Necessity is the mother of invention, and the most monstrous of weapons are hatched in times of strife. Take away the means of defending one’s self against treachery and tyranny, and you too can lay among the graves of the germans, soviets, chinese, and all of those who capitulated to despots and dictators throughout history. If these two-bit dictators want a piece of the US, they will pay for it dearly, and fail.

That looks an awful lot like an AK variant to me. Did you perhaps go to the Columbia School of Journalism? :-)

“shall not be infringed”. Period.

Chicago, the home town of Obamugabe and Rahm, LOST IN THE SUPREME COURT, IIRC.

I think the assclown has picked a losing fight here.

The democrats have totally misread public opinion (calls to congress are running 9 to 1 against) and seriously overreached on gun control and are going to pay for it politically.

The democrats totally misread public opinion and seriously overreached on ObamaCare and paid for it politically. As a result, they lost the House and lost seats in the Senate. Still, ObamaCare is now the law of the land, and our freedom is restricted by one more large step. Until such time as decent Americans push back and actually repeal unconstitutional laws whenever we can, the far left will continue to push, regardless of the political cost to them or the human cost to individual Americans who are harmed by their policies.

It may be up to the gun owners themselves to stop this. If Obama issues an EO, is there anything that can be done politically? I don't know but I know that if we had a President Romney we would not be in this fix.

I am afraid for my country and all of us.

Why can’t we count on Romney to lead the way right now?

Romney is nothing but a common ordinary citizen. How could he do anything about this?

Republicans cannot pass any legislation, they can prevent some but with this tyrant of a president, don't worry, he'll use every method available to do whatever he wants.

I didn’t write the article. I just linked the article. As you can tell, I don’t know an AK from an AR so maybe I should have been a reporter instead of a nurse. haha

“Romney is nothing but a common ordinary citizen. How could he do anything about this? “

Romney was Presidential Timber two months ago. I’m not trying to be disagreeable. I just think this situation points out how screwed we really are. We’re on our own. Mitt was vying to be our Leader in November. Now we’re facing a real battle and he’s silent. That’s no Leader - at least to me. I’m not happy about it or trying to win the internets with my comment. Just taking it all in and thinking - “Yup”.

What do you expect Romney to do? He has no authority to do anything. He has no more authority than you or I.

Romney has no better access to media than you or I? He has no better chance of stepping into the spotlight than you or I?

C’mon. I’m not happy about it either but let’s be honest about it. He could make waves that you and I cannot make. Is he a Conservative Leader two months out from competing for “The Man”, or not? Did he mean it or not?

Wow, great info. I think your reference predates “The 300” by 700 years or so.

Anyone who has read John knows he (Apostle John) was no shrinking violet.

Thank God for his example.

Actually, Romney signed an assault weapons ban...so, yes, we probably would.
