A California Drought: Not Enough Children

Declining migration and falling birthrates have led to a drop in the number of children in California just as baby boomers reach retirement, creating an economic and demographic challenge for the nation's most populous state.

"After decades of burgeoning population and economic growth…the state now faces a very different prospect," said a report released Tuesday by the University of Southern California and the Lucile Packard Foundation. The report, "California's Diminishing Resource: Children," analyzed data from the 2010 census and the American Community Survey to conclude that the trend marks a "historic transition" for the state.

My nephew’s wife is a public school teacher in CA. Her school might close because the kids just disappeared. Of course, it doesn’t help that a Classical Christian school opened in town either, and the fact that there are other private schools in the area.

Not enough children

This is not a new trend. Demographers documented that families with children were fleeing big liberal cities by the millions back in the 1990s. Seattle has more dogs than children. Big cities are not family friendly for various reasons.

The biggest growth areas for families with children has been in the south and exurbia.

Also, from what I read daily on FR, Florida is no “garden spot of conservatism.” The daily murders, break in’s, and other property and person crimes that are chronicled here lead one to understand that Florida, like all states, has serious problems with lawlessness, illegal immigration, etc. All the things you equate with the “poor quality of life” here in California. California was also one of the first states to permit the sale of Plan B over-the-counter without an age limit. Plan B, the so-called "morning-after pill," is another big factor contributing to the increase in sexually transmitted infections. California public healh officials knew this, and did it anyway.

UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Miriam Grossman has argued that promiscuity is the root cause of much depression. She believes the promiscuity-depression-suicide link is being ignored by doctors who fail to caution students about the dangers of the "hook-up" culture.

In a context of soaring rates of cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea (and cephalosporin was the last line of defense), I suppose suicide looks, not like a problem, but like a solution. No more disease-transmission. No more disease! No more adolescents. No more childbirth! Voilà!
