Rockefeller to retire, giving GOP a prime pickup opportunity
The Hill ^

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) announced Friday that he will not run for reelection in 2014, giving Republicans a prime pickup opportunity in a state that's grown increasingly red in recent years. “As I approach 50 years of public service in West Virginia, I’ve decided that 2014 will be the right moment for me to find new ways to fight for the causes I believe in and to spend more time with my incredible family," Rockefeller said in a statement. Republicans already have their top recruit in place for the race. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) threw her hat in the ring late last year, and is considered the front-runner for the seat, should she survive what could be a tough GOP primary. National Republican Senatorial Committee Executive Director Rob Collins said West Virginia is an "even stronger pickup opportunity" now that Rockefeller has stepped aside.

Hmmm, West Virgina...I cannot think of any potential Republican candidates who have been members in the KKK.

The GOP will no doubt miss that opportunity entirely.

Hope West Virginians nominate someone good. This is an opportunity to take away a Senate seat from the Democrats for a very long time. Please no ridiculous loser candidates like Angle, O’Donnell, Akin, etc.

Thanks SMGFan. The Demagogic Party and its deep-pocketed co-conspirators will spend more money to hold that seat than the Grand Kleagle did installing streetlights on every two track in the state.

No backstabbing winner candidates like McCain, Graham or Hagel would be nice too.

Agree.

Let's try to nominate the most conservative candidate that CAN win a general election.

There are poor establishment candidates too. Let's just nominate the most conservative candidate that CAN win. Where the establishment favors some squish and there is a strong Tea Party grass roots candidate that polls well against the Democrat and has a bright future, then by all means lets go with the Tea Party person. We can't keep wasting Senate opportunities on awful candidates like O'Donnell, Angle or Akin though. These are pickup opportunities we are just flushing down the toilet on joke candidates that have little to no chance to win statewide.

Is Manchin a good example?

For the Democrats he was. Manchin and pretend "conservative" Democrats like him effectively steal seats from us. He may not vote with Democrats all the time, but he denies conservatives a seat in a state we should win and delivers critical votes to Reid and Obama if they desperately need it.

“...giving GOP prime pickup opportunity.”

So what?

Even when the GOP had control of the Senate, they were completely worthless to the cause of Conservatism.

"Rockefeller to retire, giving GOP a prime pickup opportunity"

GOP is going to need a lot more than that. Something along the lines of replacement for a huge percentage of their base, myself included, that will likely never support a national republican party candidate again.

As soon as the Pubics cave on even one step of gun control, no matter how insignificant, no matter how good a deal, no matter how "common sense", I will NEVER VOTE FOR ONE AGAIN. Do you hear that Republicans? You are going to lose the House, lose ground in the Senate and no one alive will live to see the next Republican president. How's that for opportunity?

Sorry for the rant but I've supported them for 30 years and every single day of that thirty years Government has somehow gotten bigger, more expensive and more intrusive. It's time for something new.
