Mountain Man vs. Government

Primitive N.C. retreat a bit too primitive for Watauga officials

Watauga County mountain man Eustace Conway’s passion for teaching primitive living came to a sudden halt in October when local government officials shut down his operation, citing safety and health concerns.

After receiving a tip that Conway had built structures without a permit, Watauga County Planning and Inspections Director Joe Furman obtained an administrative search warrant to inspect the roughly two dozen buildings and structures at Turtle Island Preserve, Conway’s 500-plus acre retreat in the mountains east of Boone.

In September, Furman assembled a team of building inspectors, health department officials, a tax assessor, and sheriff’s deputies, who made a surprise visit to the site. Conway refers to the inspection as a “raid.”

The following month, local officials ordered Conway to stop hosting visitors and interns at Turtle Island Preserve until he obtains several permits.

- Motor vehicles without valid license plates

- No gate or protective measure surrounds the preserve’s sawmill

- Each structure doesn’t have fire access roads nearby

- Buildings don’t have kitchen areas, sinks, bathrooms, potable hot water, showers

- Unacceptable exterior wood treatment on one of the buildings consisted of motor oil

- Building code doesn’t allow use of outhouses for public use

UN Agenda 21 at work to eliminate private property and herd all the peasants into high-rise containment facilities where the can be more easily inventoried and controlled.

And terminated, when the time comes.

Har! None of the lumber in this house was 'certified by a grading organization'. I also have a car without valid tags, a compost pile, and haven't had running hot water in 5 years.

Come and get me coppers!

Correction- Eustace Conway hireso n lackeys who ‘want hte wilderness experience’ so that he himself doesn’t have to work any longer- just orders kids around and makes them do the dirtry work that he doesn’t liek doing- and let’s not forget, that he became delinquint on his taxes on his 1000+ acre stretch of land that he was given hte privilege of maintaining-

Eustace is NOT innocent in all this- He was on giovenrmentl and, and most likely agreed to certaibn things in order to be allowed to live their and he neglected to fulfill his part of hte bargain. This was NOT his own land-

[[I was wondering how he had so much land. In one show he was chasing “poachers” off his land.]]

Yeah, not so much- two overweight people AND a camaeraman ‘chasing a lone fit hunter’ and catchign up with him? I don’t think so- it- like ALL the ‘reality shows’ was correographed for maximum ‘drama’ (read: The ‘poacher’ was nothing more than an actor hired to pretend he was poaching)

Eustace charges $95 dollars for ‘spoon carving lessons’ which I’m sure his lackeys happily fork over to him in order to ‘learn how to carve’ a spoon-lol

Eustace is nothing more than a hippy hypocrite who loves capitalism when it coems to himself, but despises it for everyoen else- He’s a merketting entrepeneur who has learned that clueless kids ‘looking for a wilderness experience’ will jump at the chance to do all his dirty and hard work while he sits back and rakes in the dough- I’m not certain, but htese kids probably even have to PAY him for the ‘privilege’ of his ‘experience’

He’s a capitalist who doesn’t pay his taxes- bottom line-

I understand that. Just ignore him and live your own life. I'm not condoning him. Never heard of him. Never watched his show. Other than a heavy handed raid by the government it wouldn't even be newsworthy here. So I read it and go on.

“Don’t these officials have anything better to do, ferchrissake?”

-this is what they do, expand their reach and influence. Government agencies must expand or wither and die, which of course will never happen because G-People vote their jobs.

This is why “poverty” will never be eliminated, because to do so would eliminate the need for those who administer to the impoverished.

And the definition and parameters of what “impoverished” is have kept pace with the expansion... or is it vice versa?

[[The only one I watch is “Moonshiners”]]

That’s one of the worse- apparwently the law down htere can’t find moonshin ers, bvut camera crews have no problem doing so? And hwo in their right mind is goign to be braggign about their illegal activities to the world by sahwoing them their suppsoed illegal activities on national TV? I’d think by now the law woudl realize that the large number of camera crew ‘hiding i n the brush beside the road as the police drive merrily by without a clue as to where tyhsoe sneaky shienrs were’, and drivign by the myriad of A&E vehicvles (or whatever channel is filming htem) meant that maybe, just maybe, the ‘moonshiners’ were close by- but apaprently they don’t because those wassally shienrs are just too slick for them

I just don’t get it- tbhe camera peopel evidently are very ‘lucky camera operators to always be in just the right places and at just the right angles to catch all the ‘developing action’ as it ‘spontaniously plays out’ before them

On you tube they hsoudl the supposed ‘fight’ between scott and captain vern o nthe gold show when they were in the bar together- watchign the video at normal speed you woudl swear that scott (the brute that he ‘is’) broke the glass in Vern’s face, you coudl hear the glass break- but I recorded the show at home, and went htrough the whole scene frame by frame, and the glass never broke— nor did it hit vern’s face, and none of the punches thrown during hte ‘fight’ connected with either man- I mentioend the dubbed in sound (without mentioning that I watched frame by frame and discovered that hte glass did NOT break) and the fact that noone made contact during hte punches, and someoen on yuotube- presumably someoen connectec with hte show, swore up and down they do ‘not dub in sounds’ and that the fight was ‘spontanious and real’ (or soemthign to that fact- I then explained to them what they just said waS BS and that anyoen coudl watch frame by frame and clearly see that what they said was BS

These fake drama shows are gettign tiring- the thing is, these shows could stand on their own without all the feaux paw (sp?) drama added in and sound effects poorly dubbed in-
Even hte repo show with lou and sonia there was a suppsoed ‘real fight’ and I again watched it frame by frame, saw lou compeltely miss the person when he punched, but heard a punch smack sound nonetheless-

And hardcore pawn- what a joke- apaprently every third person in chicago is an exhibitionist who never gets arrested by the law for exposing htemselves in public-

Sorry or htel ong post- I’m not pickign on anyone who lieks the shows, I’m just upset abotu the prodfucers of the hsow lying ot hte public all the time

well with hte DVR recorder- you cna go ahead frame by frame- I was curious to see whether these suppsoed fights on various shows were real or not, and come to find out they are not- they are carefulyl correographed with camera angles all set before hand to ‘catch the action’ and to also hide the misses (fake punches)

I was stunned though when the apparent crew member for the gold dredgign show adamantly declared that they ‘do not dub in sounds’- when I revealed that they infact DO dub in sounds, and that hte suppsoed bar fight proved it, there was silence- no more denials

in the psirit of bad spellers everywhere- here’s al ink showing many geniuses were infact horrible spellers- We geniuses are too preoccupied with other htigns to be bothered with spelling

[[4. Ernest Hemingway

So how bad was his spelling? Whenever his newspaper editors complained about it, he’d retort, “Well, that’s what you’re hired to correct!”]]

[[3. F. Scott Fitzgerald

So how bad was his spelling? Preeminent American literary critic Edmund Wilson described This Side of Paradise as “one of the most illiterate books of any merit ever published.”]]

[[Genius and disorders seem to go hand in hand. Da Vinci, was a dyslexic, who wrote most of his theories in reverse script. General belief says that troubled souls have heightened creative powers, which makes for great literature, music and even science. From John Lennon and Agatha Christie to Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Michael Faraday, Pablo Picasso and Walt Disney, dyslexics have spun images in their heads, played with them, and have created some of the most spell-binding inventions and discoveries.]]

[[You, Sir, are no genius.]]

Are you sure about htat- You apaprently are all knowing- because even htough you don’t know me, or what IQ I sport, you seem to ‘shallowly’) claim to know my IQ simply by looking at how I spell somethign or express my opinion- Soem of htose writers I listed were infact geniouses and their writing was terrible- Their editors had a terrible time deciferign their thoughts- Care to insinuater that they too are ignorant?

If you feel my observatiosn and comments are obtuse=- then point out were you think I may be wrong isntead of strokign your own ego by falsely accusign me of somethign you know nothign about! The context of what I wrote was valid, it was to the points brogught up i nthe article, and htere was nothign obtuse abotu htem- if you feel they were then explain yourself isnteasd of beign rude and shallow and obnoxious- pettiness doesn’t win arguments- and certainly doesn’t pucast a very good spotlight on your character-

What couldn’t you understand about it? My points were plenty clear enough for several folks to continue hte covnersation ina polite and civil manner— but you seem to be so mired in the false notion that spelling equates to genius, that it sparks a shallow and petty insulting nature of yours- but if being rude and shallow to others that don’t tow your little spelling perfection line makes you all warm and fuzzy inside- and if that’s what you need to lift your spirits- well- whatever- I do feel sorry for you-

As I said before- thsi is an informal forum- I left school and it’s formal rigidity a long time agao- and if your are too anal to get past the fact that some folks just aren’t as uptight abotu things like spelling as you are, then whatever- but don’t try to pretend that spelling = genius- because as I’ve shown it doesn’t-

[[I can work through your miserable spelling but your construction is obtuse.]]

Oh and by the way- you can’t wevne use correct descriptions- abnd I’m to take advice from you? My first posts were plenty observant and shapr and clear- If you need to explain slowly what shoudl have been clear and obvious points to you, then lemme know- - but if you can’t make out comments that are direct, observant , and to the point, then I wouldn’t be insultign others and pretendign your crap don’t stink if I were you-
