Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), President Obama's pick for Defense secretary, expressed regret for a past comment about the “Jewish lobby” that has threatened to derail his nomination.
In a letter to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) released Monday, Hagel called the remark a "poor choice of words," and vowed that he would work to "expand the depth and breadth of U.S.-Israel cooperation" if confirmed for the Pentagon’s top post.
"I regret saying it," Hagel wrote. "I used that terminology only once, in an interview. I recognize that this kind of language can be construed as anti-Israel. I know the pro-Israel lobby is comprised of both Jewish and non-Jewish Americans.”
Hagel, who has been tapped to replace departing Secretary Leon Panetta, has faced intense scrutiny over the past remark, where he accused a “Jewish lobby” of intimidating lawmakers. Pro-Israel groups and many GOP senators have seized on the comment, charging that Hagel would be a weak ally to Israel.
A number of GOP senators have said they will oppose Hagel, and the nominee this week is meeting with Democrats on Capitol Hill to rally support ahead of his confirmation hearing.
In his letter, Hagel sought to reassure lawmakers that he has been a committed supporter of Israel.

Does Chuck Hagel really need the job so badly he is willing to demean himself and take back his spoken words to get it?
Do we call this the integrity we want in a man in such a powerful position? Does anyone who would lower themselves to work for the Obama administration have any integrity?

It’s a sad day when Obama manages to find someone even worse than his current Communist SecDef. But that’s the pattern. One dreadful appointment after another, and if any of them leave, their replacements are even worse.
Hard to imagine they could get worse, but they do.

This guy is cutting his own throat. Just tell the truth and stop being so pc. Even the Jewish lobby will admit there is a Jewish lobby.
And Juan MeCain says that’s good enough for him, has his vote, no problemo.

You’re assuming that UpChuck has any integrity at all. He was a crap senator who made it clear to Nebraskans that he was sent to the senate to represent his view of issues and not the views of Nebraskans. Arrogant, pompous POS. He lies, why else would der Fuehrer nominate him? He’s a declared republican but is less conservative than any rino. His chief qualification is that he will do der Fuehrer’s bidding in destroying the military.
The 17th amendment should be repealed.
