Henderson County Sheriff Charlie McDonald cringed when he heard that President Obama planned to make an announcement today about sweeping gun-control proposals...
"I can see where this could be a real nightmare," McDonald said...
McDonald doesn't believe that limiting the size of magazine clips and banning assault rifles is the answer.
"I don't think you're going to change people's behaviors by adding laws to the existing laws that we have already," he said. "You're trying to regulate the criminal element through laws which they broke in the first place.
"Limiting the rights of free, law-abiding Americans because of the transgressions of a criminal element is not right. It goes against everything we're founded on as a nation," McDonald added. "The argument that people only need certain guns for hunting has no merit at all because nobody ever established that the Second Amendment was based on our right to hunt. The Second Amendment was established to ensure that we always had a means of self-protection from a criminal element and from a tyrannical government."...
Banning certain weapons will not solve the problem, McDonald added.
"When we have emotional reactions that actually start eroding away at the very constitutional rights that were given us when we won our freedom, or established in winning our freedom, from a tyrannical government, we're kind of going backward," he said.
"I swore an oath when I took this office I would defend the Constitution of the United States... I will always defend that right. And I think a lot more people really need to start doing a gut check and decide where they draw that line."

This is not the purpose of gun control. The ultimate goal is total gun confiscation.
Absolutely right. It’s about people whose “moral code” allows them to steal, maim and kill. They should be rendered unable to do those things.
Innocent, non-violent individuals should be left alone.
I live in Wisconsin, can I vote for the sheriff in North Carolina? Wait, I’ll ask the Odumbo people, they know how to get around all those damn voting regulations. (sarc)
