Byron Thomas is 19, black, a freshman at the University of South Carolina Beaufort and a proud Southerner. He hung a Confederate flag in his dorm room window until the university asked him to take it down because several people had complained about it. (The university later stepped back from the request, saying all students have the right to free speech.)

"That flag means to me Southern heritage. I love the South. I've always lived in the South. And everything about the South, to me, is just great." --Byron Thomas

This is a little old, I know. But I thought it very interesting, and couldn't find it posted elsewhere.

No, all minority students have the right to free speech. If this was a white guy, he'd have been run off campus.

Many blacks fought for and served in the Army of the Confederacy with distinction. This is a fact recognized by the Union at the time. Many blacks fought believing it would move them closer to freedom—we shall never know if this would have happened—but it was possible. Only with the Civil Rights Movement—and opposition of the so called Dixiecrats that the battle flag of the CSA has been vilified as a hate symbol. Others fought for the south as well—Cherokee Indians, and others. Some from the North came to defend the idea of succession. Black Confederates need to be honored—there is a group that needs a monument!

I’ve got a better question. Why would stupid kids enjoying the fruits of capitalism wear Che t-shirts?

Back in my jr high/high school southern rock and Dukes of Hazzard loving days I had a confederate flag. And I cast no aspersions on someone who still has one.

At this point, however, I feel like the KKK and Neo Nazis have co-opted the flag to the point where I wouldn’t be comfortable having or displaying one .

To me (and this is my opinion only) it’s a little like the Roman salute, and how now its seen as “Heil Hitler” and not a legitimate gesture.

I try hard...I really do...to feel the white guilt my long and involved Southern heritage should torture me with as demanded by the immoral yet surprisingly self righteous and delusional liberal gods of asshole America...

...but I can't cuz it just ain't reality.

IIRC
many black (slave-owners) fought FOR the south during the unCIVIL war.

Like H. K. Edgerton. Most people --- even most FReepers --- would probably be surprised at how many black Confederates thee are.

There are several monuments to Black Confederates, http://www.southernheritage411.com/bc.php?nw=036

This includes a monument at Arlington Cemetery: http://www.blackconfederatesoldiers.com/black_soldiers_memorials_5.html

The KKK also uses the Bible.

Did you stop displaying your Bible?

maybe because southern culture today is more free and open and respectful than northern opression and hidden racism.

I post this periodically (and apologies to those who've seen it before) but these two maps provide further proof positive that your assessment is 100% correct. Compare the states of the Confederacy and those states where Right to Work is the law. Note that every single state of the old Confederacy now stands uniformly in opposition to the slavery of unionism. The "Solid South" is back and stands as the vanguard against the tyranny of Big Labor:

Maurice Bessinger had his Piggy Park BBQ sauce pulled from the Piggly Wiggly and other grocery chains because he saw heritage and not hate in the CSA battle flag...

Still has the best sauce ever made and it still sells just as well.

When it comes down to opinions, I respect the man who sees the Lord before the Devil when all things are considered...

...but the Godless Left is just that and nothing else.

Why would a black kid display the American flag? Slavery thrived under it longer than it did in the Confederacy.

I remember the days when the university flew the “Stars and Bars” right next to the “Stars and Stripes” at football games, how there was an invocation and national anthem before the game and how the student body sang “Dixie” during halftime.
